Limits at a Point
A content creator is streaming live, and minute 5 was not recorded because of a platform glitch. Can you tell how many followers the channel was approaching right at that minute, even though there is no data? That is what limits are for: they describe where a function is heading, not just what it equals at the point.
Direct substitution
If the function is defined and "well-behaved" at the point (a polynomial, a fraction whose denominator doesn't vanish, a square root of something positive), the limit is found by substituting.

Estimating limits with a table of values
When substitution gives $\frac00$, a table with values very close to the point, from both sides, tells you where the function is heading. It is an estimate: afterward you confirm it with algebra.

A content creator has observed that the growth of followers on their channel during the first hour of a livestream follows the function $f(x) = \frac{x^2 - 25}{x - 5}$, where $x$ is the time in minutes. However, right at minute $x = 5$, the platform suffered a small technical error and did not record data.
Estimate the value that the number of followers approaches as time approaches $5$ minutes by completing the following table of values and calculating the limit:
| $x$ | $4.9$ | $4.99$ | $4.999$ | $5.001$ | $5.01$ | $5.1$ |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $f(x)$ |
$\lim_{x \to 5} \frac{x^2 - 25}{x - 5}$
One-sided limits and graphs
For the limit at $a$ to exist, the function must approach the same value from the left ($x\to a^-$) and from the right ($x\to a^+$). This matters for piecewise-defined functions and when reading graphs.

Finding parameters so the limit exists
Sometimes the function includes a letter ($a$, $b$, $k$, $m$) and the problem asks for its value so that something happens. The idea is always the same: translate the condition into an equation using the limits.
When the denominator has a repeated factor
If the denominator is $(x-a)^2$, making the numerator vanish once is not enough: after canceling a single $(x-a)$ the quotient is still $\frac00$. For the limit to be finite, the numerator must also contain $(x-a)^2$, which means you have to factor and cancel twice.

$C(x) = \begin{cases} 5x + 2 & \text{if } 0 < x \le 2 \\ \sqrt{ax + 12} & \text{if } x > 2 \end{cases}$
Find the value of the parameter $a$ so that the cost does not have a discontinuity at the point $x = 2$, that is, so that the limit $\lim_{x \to 2} C(x)$ exists and equals the value of the function.

Given the piecewise-defined function that models the marginal production cost of a technology company as a function of the units $x$ (in thousands):
$$f(x) = \begin{cases} \frac{x^2 - a}{x - 2} & \text{if } x < 2 \\ \sqrt{x + b} & \text{if } x \geq 2 \end{cases}$$Determine the values of the parameters $a$ and $b$ knowing that the limit of the function at the break point $x = 2$ exists and that this limit is equal to $4$. Reasonably justify whether the function is continuous at that point based on the calculated one-sided limits.
The indeterminate form $\frac00$: factor and cancel
If the numerator and denominator are polynomials that both vanish at $x=a$, both have the factor $(x-a)$. Canceling it removes the indeterminate form. If you still get $\frac00$ after canceling, repeat the process.

A sociological study establishes that a user's level of satisfaction with a social network, $S(t)$, measured from 0 to 100, follows the following function in relation to the time $t$ (in months) they have been registered:
$$S(t) = \frac{2t^3 - 10t^2 + 12t}{t^2 - 5t + 6}$$Calculate the limit of satisfaction as time approaches $2$ months and $3$ months. Interpret the result obtained: what physically happens to the user's satisfaction at those moments in time?
The conjugate with radicals
If $\frac00$ appears with a square root, multiply the numerator and denominator by the conjugate (the same expression with the middle sign changed). That way the root is eliminated by the product of conjugate binomials.

$$\lim_{x \to 7} \frac{2 - \sqrt{x - 3}}{x^2 - 49}$$Explain step by step the simplification process and how you manage to eliminate the factor that makes the denominator zero.
Vertical asymptote or removable discontinuity?
If the denominator vanishes at $x=a$, everything depends on the numerator: if it does not vanish, there is a vertical asymptote; if it also vanishes, you cancel and there may be just a hole.

Given the rational function $f(x) = \frac{2x^2 - 8}{x^2 - 4x + 4}$, study its behavior as $x$ approaches $2$.
To do so, calculate the one-sided limits:
$\lim_{x \to 2^-} f(x)$ and $\lim_{x \to 2^+} f(x)$
Explain, based on the results, whether the function has a vertical asymptote or a removable discontinuity at that point.

Back to the beginning: with $f(x)=\frac{x^2-25}{x-5}$ you factor $(x-5)(x+5)$, cancel, and the limit at $x=5$ is $10$. The channel was approaching $10$ followers even though the minute-5 data was not recorded.
