The Concept of the Derivative

Before you start, make sure you know: Rate of change, average rate of change, and growth rate (High School Year 1 (semesters 1 and 2))
Before you start, make sure you know: Point-slope equation of a line (High School Year 1 (semesters 1 and 2))

A content creator in Guadalajara checks every night how many followers they gained. That figure, "followers per day," is an average: it doesn't say whether today grew faster than yesterday. To know what is happening right now, at this instant, we need another tool: the derivative. We will build it from something you already know, the average rate of change.

From the Average to the Instantaneous Rate of Change

To find out what happens at an exact instant, for example $t=1$, we shrink the interval: we compute the ARC on $[1, 1+h]$ and see what happens as $h$ gets smaller and smaller.

A content creator analyses the growth of their followers on a social network over the past week. The number of followers $S$ as a function of day $t$ is given by the expression $S(t) = t^2 + 10t + 500$. Calculate the Average Rate of Change (ARC) of their followers between day $t=1$ and day $t=4$. Explain in your own words what the result obtained means in the context of the problem.

When There Is a Root: The Conjugate

If $f$ has a square root, substituting $h=0$ gives $\frac{0}{0}$ and it can't be simplified at a glance. The trick is to multiply the numerator and denominator by the conjugate of the numerator, so that we can use $(A-B)(A+B)=A^2-B^2$ and eliminate the roots.

One-Sided Derivatives and Continuity

Just as with limits, if the quotient is computed only with $h\to0^+$ or only with $h\to0^-$, we get the one-sided derivatives. Both are needed for the derivative to exist.

Graph with a corner where the slopes of the left and right tangent half-lines do not match corner

When one of the branches contains a natural logarithm, you need its derivative. It is obtained from the definition using the known limit $\lim_{h\to0}\dfrac{\ln(1+h)}{h}=1$: for example, the derivative of $\ln x$ at $x=1$ is $\lim_{h\to0}\dfrac{\ln(1+h)-\ln 1}{h}=1$. In general, $(\ln x)'=\dfrac1x$, and for $\ln(x-c)$ the derivative is $\dfrac{1}{x-c}$ (you will see why in the section on rules).

The Sign of the Derivative: A First Reading

The sign of the derivative already tells a lot about the graph. If $f'(a) > 0$, the function rises at $a$; if $f'(a) < 0$, it falls; if $f'(a) = 0$, the tangent is horizontal.

Horizontal Tangent: Maximum, Minimum, or Neither?

To find the points with a horizontal tangent, solve $f'(x)=0$. But $f'(c)=0$ is not enough to know what happens at $c$: you have to see how the sign of $f'$ changes as you pass through $c$.
