Graphing a Function Step by Step
Ximena sells bracelets at a tianguis (open-air market) and wants to see on a graph how her cost per bracelet changes as she makes more of them. Graphing is not "connecting points until it looks nice": each type of function has a fixed procedure, with a few key pieces of data (a slope, a vertex, an asymptote) that are enough to graph it correctly. At the end of the page we will return to Ximena's graph.

A food delivery driver earns a base wage of $80$ pesos per hour worked. Plot the linear function $f(x) = 80x$, where $x$ is the number of hours and $f(x)$ is the money earned. To draw it, follow these steps:
-
Create a table of values by calculating the outputs for $x = 0, 1, 2$ and $3$.
-
Plot the points on the Cartesian plane.
-
Connect the points with a ray (keeping in mind that hours cannot be negative).
Graphing a Line
Special case: the constant function
If $m=0$, you get $f(x)=b$: no matter what the value of $x$ is, the function always has the same value. It is a constant function and its slope is $0$. Its graph is a horizontal line at height $b$: it passes through $(0,b)$ and through $(1,b)$, and through any other point $(x,b)$.
For example, a streaming platform with a flat rate of $\$240$ per month: $f(x)=240$ for $x=0$, $10$, or $20$ movies. All the points have $y=240$, and the graph is a horizontal line.

A financial analyst is studying the evolution of the return on a technology investment over 10 years. The function that describes the return $R(t)$ as a function of time $t$ (in years) is given by the following piecewise expression:
$R(t) = \begin{cases} \dfrac{2t - 4}{t + 1} & \text{if } 0 \le t < 4 \\[2mm] |t^2 - 10t + 21| & \text{if } 4 \le t \le 10 \end{cases}$

You are going to graph the absolute value function $f(x) = |x - 3|$ (in your notebook, if you like, as a support). Follow these steps:
-
First graph the auxiliary line $y = x - 3$ as a dashed line.
-
Identify the point where the line crosses the $X$ axis (it is the point where the direction of the graph changes, the vertex).
-
"Reflect" the part of the line that lies below the $X$ axis onto the positive side of the $Y$ axis.
-
Highlight the final stroke of the function $f(x)$.
Now answer based on your graph:
- a) What is the abscissa $x$ of the point where the line $y = x - 3$ crosses the $X$ axis?
- b) What value does the auxiliary line take at $x = 0$? And what value does $f(0)$ take after reflecting?
- c) Calculate $f(5)$.
- d) For $x < 3$, the graph of $f$ coincides with the line $y = -x + 3$. What is its slope?
It will be assessed that the auxiliary line, the crossing point, the reflection and the final stroke are consistent with each other, and that the values you give in the parts match your graph.

Extension: Oblique Asymptote
If the degree of $P$ is one more than the degree of $Q$, the function does not approach a constant but a slanted line. To find it, divide the polynomials: the quotient $y=mx+n$ is the oblique asymptote (also called the slant asymptote).
Why? When you divide, $f(x)=mx+n+\dfrac{R(x)}{Q(x)}$, and the last term tends to $0$ as $x\to\pm\infty$.

Graphing an Exponential Function
When the exponent is not simply $x$
Sometimes the exponent is an expression, for example $e^{1/(x-2)}$. Then the asymptote is no longer always $y=0$ and there may be a discontinuity. You reason like this: 1) the domain excludes the values that make the denominator of the exponent zero; 2) calculate the one-sided limits by seeing where the exponent goes: if the exponent $\to+\infty$, $e^{\text{exp}}\to+\infty$; if the exponent $\to-\infty$, $e^{\text{exp}}\to0$; 3) at $\pm\infty$, see what number the exponent approaches and evaluate $e^{\text{that number}}$ (if the exponent $\to0$, $e^0=1$).
