The exponential function
A bacterium divides in two every hour. A radioactive substance loses half of its mass after a certain period of time. In both cases, the amount does not change by always adding the same quantity (as in a straight line), but by always multiplying by the same number. This is exponential growth or decay, and it grows — or decays — much faster than intuition usually expects.
The exponential function

All the functions $y=a^x$ pass through the point $(0, 1)$, because $a^0=1$ always.

They also pass through $(1, a)$.

Calculate the average rate of change of the exponential function $f(x) = 3^x$ in the intervals $[1, 2]$ and $[2, 3]$. What do you observe when comparing both results? What does this indicate about the rate of growth of the exponential function compared to a linear function?
The horizontal asymptote and translations
In $g(x) = a^{x-p}+q$, the exponent $x-p$ shifts the curve $p$ units horizontally, and the final $+q$ shifts it $q$ units vertically, taking the asymptote with it: the new asymptote is $y=q$.

Back to the beginning: If you start with a single bacterium that divides in two every hour, after one day ($24$ hours) there will be $1 \cdot 2^{24} = 16\,777\,216$ bacteria, almost $17$ million from just one!
