Linear equations in two unknowns

Three adult cinema tickets and two children's tickets add up to 34 €. That sentence translates into $3x + 2y = 34$. Here there are two unknowns and only one equation: there is not a single solution, but a whole range of pairs $(x, y)$ that satisfy it. Let's see what that means and how to work with it.

What a linear equation in two unknowns is

With just one equation of this kind there are infinitely many solutions: choose a value of $x$ and the value of $y$ follows from it (or the other way round).

Diagram showing several pairs of values $(x, y)$ that satisfy the equation $3x + 2y = 34$, such as $(0, 17)$, $(4, 11)$, $(8, 5)$ and $(10, 2)$. 3x + 2y = 34 x = 0y = 17 x = 4y = 11 x = 8y = 5 x = 10y = 2 … and many more: any x gives a value of y

To check a solution, substitute both coordinates: $(4, 11)$ works because $3 \cdot 4 + 2 \cdot 11 = 12 + 22 = 34$ ✓. $(3, -1)$ does not, because $3 \cdot 3 + 2 \cdot (-1) = 7 \ne 34$.

The straight line: graphical representation

If you mark on a plane all the pairs $(x, y)$ that satisfy $ax + by = c$, you get a straight line. That is the reason for the name "linear".

To draw it by hand, two points are enough: the most convenient ones are usually where the line crosses each axis, that is, by setting $x = 0$ and then $y = 0$.

Rearranging for one unknown and generating solutions

To find solutions easily, rearrange the equation to make one unknown (normally $y$) the subject in terms of the other.

Diagram showing how to make $y$ the subject in $5x - 2y = 10$ to obtain $y = (5x - 10)/2$. 5x − 2y = 10 we make y the subject y = (5x − 10) / 2

Setting up an equation from a word problem

  1. Decide what each unknown represents and write it down.

  2. Translate the statement word by word: "twice", "the sum of", "costs in total"…

  3. Check that the equation makes sense with a simple value.
