Quadratic equations

You also met quadratic equations last year. Here is a quick review, plus a very useful new tool: getting information from the solutions without solving the equation.

Before you start, make sure you know: Quadratic equations (3rd ESO)

Cardano-Vieta: sum and product of the solutions

Diagram of the Cardano-Vieta relations showing the sum and product of the solutions in a specific example. x² + x − 20 = 0 x₁ + x₂ = −1 (= −b) x₁ · x₂ = −20 (= c) x₁ = 4, x₂ = −5

This property also works the other way round: to build an equation from its solutions.
