Thales' Theorem

About $2\,600$ years ago, Thales of Miletus measured the height of an Egyptian pyramid without climbing it: he only used a stick stuck in the ground and the shadow of both. The idea he used always works whenever there are parallel lines, and you are going to use it too.

Triangles in the Thales position

When a small triangle sits inside a larger one, they share a vertex and the opposite side is parallel, the two triangles are in the Thales position: they are similar, and all their corresponding sides are proportional.

Dividing a segment into proportional parts

Thales' theorem can also be used to split a segment into equal parts or into a given ratio, with a ruler and compasses, without measuring by eye.

Measuring heights with shadows

At the same time of day, the sun's rays reach all objects in parallel. For this reason, each object and its shadow form a right-angled triangle similar to the one formed by any other object and its shadow at that same moment.

To measure the height of a basketball hoop, a Year 8 student places a vertical stick $1,5$ metres tall so that the end of its shadow coincides exactly with the end of the basketball hoop's shadow. If the stick's shadow is $2,1$ metres long and the distance from the base of the stick to the base of the basketball hoop is $2,2$ metres, how tall is the basketball hoop?

Back to the beginning: Thales measured the shadow of the pyramid and that of his stick at the same moment: since the sun's rays are parallel, the ratio $\frac{\text{height}}{\text{shadow}}$ is identical for both and makes it possible to calculate the height without climbing it.
