Systems of equations

In a stationery shop, two pens and three erasers cost 4 €; two pens and one eraser cost 2 €. How much does each item cost? There are two unknowns (the pen and the eraser) and two clues. A single equation is not enough: you need to solve them at the same time. That is a system of equations.

Before you start, make sure you know: First-degree equations (1st ESO)
Before you start, make sure you know: The language of algebra (1st ESO)

What a system is

To check a solution, substitute into both equations, not just one. If $x = 0{,}5$ and $y = 1$: $2 \cdot 0{,}5 + 3 \cdot 1 = 4$ ✓ and $2 \cdot 0{,}5 + 1 = 2$ ✓.

Graphical meaning

Each equation of this kind, with two unknowns, is a line (all its points are solutions). The solution of the system is the point where the two lines intersect. Move the lines and observe:

Three cases for the relative position of two lines: intersecting with one solution, parallel with no solution and coincident with infinitely many solutions. intersect:one solution parallel:none coincide:infinitely many

In a role-playing video game, the experience points of two skills, Strength ($x$) and Magic ($y$), must satisfy the conditions of the following system of equations:

$$\begin{cases} x + y = 15 \\ 2x - y = 9 \end{cases}$$

Check, by carrying out the necessary operations, which of these pairs of values is the correct solution to the system for the character to level up:

  1. a) $x = 10, y = 5$
  2. b) $x = 8, y = 7$

Translate into algebraic language and write down the corresponding system of equations for the following situation:

"In a café, we were charged $5$ € for two soft drinks ($x$) and a bag of crisps ($y$). If we buy one soft drink and one bag of crisps, the price is $3$ €."

(It is not necessary to solve it, just set up the system).

Substitution method

You solve for one unknown in one equation and substitute it into the other. It works especially well when an unknown is already isolated or has coefficient $1$.

Visual outline of the steps for solving a system of equations using the substitution method. 1. Isolatey = 2x 2. Substituteinto the other 3. Solvex = 2 4. Go backy = 4

$$\begin{cases} 3x + y = 10 \\ y = 2x \end{cases}$$

Equating method

You solve for the same unknown in both equations and equate the two expressions you obtain.

Solve

Elimination method

You multiply the equations by suitable numbers so that, when you add (or subtract) them, one of the unknowns disappears.

Solving a system by elimination, adding two equations with opposite coefficients in y to eliminate that unknown. 4x+ y= 13 x− y= 2 + 5x 0= 15 x = 3 +y and −y are opposites: when added, the y disappears Then: 4·3 + y = 13 → y = 1

Lucía has bought $2$ pens and $3$ rubbers at the stationer's for a total of $4$ €. Pedro has bought $2$ pens and $1$ rubber for $2$ €.

If $x$ is the price of a pen and $y$ that of a rubber, the system representing the situation is:

$$\begin{cases} 2x + 3y = 4 \\ 2x + y = 2 \end{cases}$$

Find the price of each item using the elimination method (subtracting both equations).

Setting up problems with systems

  1. Choose two unknowns and write down what each one means ($x$ = price of the pen, $y$ = price of the eraser).

  2. Turn each piece of information in the problem into a different equation.

  3. Solve using whichever method suits you best and check against the problem.

Outline of the four steps for solving a problem with systems: identify the unknowns, set up the equations, solve the system and check the solution. 15 in total x = 8 (Strength)y = 7 (Magic) x + y = 152x − y = 9

In a strategy video game, to unlock an upgrade you need to collect blue gems and red gems. We know that three times the number of blue gems plus twice the number of red gems gives a total of 34 energy. Furthermore, the difference between the number of blue and red gems is only 3.

  1. a) Set up a system of equations to find out how many gems of each type you need.
  2. b) Check whether the pair of values $x = 8, y = 5$ (where $x$ are the blue gems and $y$ are the red gems) is the solution to the system.

Look at the following figure made up of two rectangles with different properties. Rectangle A has a perimetre of $22\text{ cm}$. Rectangle B is such that its base is twice that of rectangle A and its height is three times that of rectangle A, having a total perimetre of $52\text{ cm}$.

A x y P = 22 cm B 2x 3y P = 52 cm

Calculate the dimensions $x$ (base) and $y$ (height) of rectangle A by setting up and solving a system using the equating method.

Solve

Back to the beginning: The stationery shop system was $\begin{cases} 2x + 3y = 4 \\ 2x + y = 2 \end{cases}$; when we solved it we got $x = 0{,}5$ and $y = 1$, so each pen costs $0{,}50$ € and each eraser costs $1$ €.
