The set of integers

How many integers satisfy "its absolute value is less than or equal to $4$"? And what if they also have to be greater than $-2$? You already know what an integer is: now you are going to treat it as part of a set, with conditions that combine.

Opposite and absolute value: always, sometimes or never?

When a statement is about "all integers", for it to be true it must hold every time; to show that it is false, a single counterexample is enough.

Consider two integers $a$ and $b$. It is known that $a$ is a negative number and $b$ is a positive number. State whether the following statements are always true, sometimes true, or always false, justifying your answer with an example:

  1. a) $|a|$ is always greater than $b$.
  2. b) The opposite of $b$ is always less than $a$.
  3. c) The absolute value of $a$ is always a positive number.
  4. d) $b$ is always greater than $a$.

Sets of integers defined by conditions

Sometimes a set is not given by a list, but by one or more conditions that its elements must satisfy at the same time.

Determine all the integers $x$ that simultaneously satisfy the following three conditions:

  • Its absolute value is greater than $5$ and less than or equal to $9$.

  • The number $x$ does not belong to the set of natural numbers $\mathbb{N}$.

  • $x$ is an even number.

Graphically represent on the number line the set of solutions you obtained. You can use this unmarked number line as a guide:
