Monomials

The profit for each download of a game in an app store is expressed by the monomial $7x^2y$. Before doing any calculation with it, you need to know how to read it: which part is the number and which part is the letters.

Before you start, make sure you know: Monomials and operations with monomials (1st ESO)
Before you start, make sure you know: Perimeters and areas of polygons (1st ESO)

What a monomial is

Diagram of the monomial 7x²y showing the coefficient 7, the literal part x²y and the degree calculated as 2 plus 1 equals 3. 7 x²y coefficient literal part degree = 2 + 1 = 3 (the y has exponent 1, even if it is not written)

Like monomials

$5x^2$ and $-2x^2$ are like monomials. $5x^2$ and $5x$ are not, even though they look similar: the exponents do not match.

Graphical comparison of like monomials that share a literal part versus monomials that are not like. like monomials 5x² −2x² same literalpart: x² not like monomials (different literal part) 5x² 5x degree 2and degree 1

The numerical value of a monomial

To work out the numerical value of a monomial, substitute each letter with its value (in brackets if it is negative) and calculate.

Step-by-step calculation of the numerical value by substituting x with -1 in the monomial -5x² to obtain -5. M(x) = −5x²substitute x = −1 −5 · (−1)²= −5 · 1 = −5

Adding and subtracting like monomials

$$4x + 2x - x = (4 + 2 - 1)x = 5x$$ Visual representation of adding and subtracting monomials by grouping blocks with the same literal part x². x² x² + x = 2x² + x cannot be combined into a single monomial: x² and x are not like terms

Monomials in areas, perimeters and sentences

The dimensions of a shape can be monomials. The area of a rectangle with base $5x$ and height $3x$ is $5x \cdot 3x = 15x^2$: you will see this in detail in the section on operations with monomials, but you can already identify which monomial corresponds to each quantity.
