Problems with equations

Solving the equation is the mechanical part, the one you already know how to do. The hard part, and the one that really matters, is setting it up: turning a problem written in words into an equation (or a system). With a clear method and a few templates, most problems become routine.

Before you start, make sure you know: Algebraic language (1st ESO)
Before you start, make sure you know: First-degree equations (1st ESO)

The four-step method

Diagram of the four steps for solving problems: choose the unknowns, translate the information, set up and solve the equation, and check the result 1What is x(e y)? 2Translate thedata 3Set up andsolve 4Check againstthe problem Step 4 catches half of the mistakes: does the result make sense?
  1. Choose the unknown (or both, if you need a system) and write down what each one stands for.

  2. Translate each piece of information in the problem using those letters.

  3. Set up the equation (or the system) using the missing condition, and solve it.

  4. Check against the problem itself, not just against the equation, and answer with a sentence and units.

Numbers and ages

Consecutive numbers: if the first is $x$, the next is $x+1$, and the one after is $x+2$.

Ages: use a table with "today" and "in"/"ago" a certain number of years. Time passes equally for everyone, so you add (or subtract) the same amount to each age.

Today In 8 years' time
Younger brother $x$ $x + 8$
Older brother $2x$ $2x + 8$
Three consecutive whole numbers x, x+1 and x+2 with values 16, 17 and 18: the first two add up to 33, which is 15 more than the third x16 x+117 x+218 add up to 33 33 = 18 + 15

On a social network, Alba has three times as many followers as her brother Javier. If Alba were to lose $150$ followers and Javier were to gain $50$, both would have exactly the same amount. How many followers does each currently have?

Geometry problems: perimeters

In geometry, always draw the figure and write the measurements using $x$. Then use the perimeter formula (the sum of all the sides).

Isosceles triangle with equal sides of length x, a base of length x minus 5 and the equation for its perimeter xx base = x − 5 perimeter: x + x + (x − 5) = 40 → x = 15

A farmer wants to fence off a triangular plot for his sheep. Knowing that it is an isosceles triangle, that the unequal side measures $5$ metres less than each of the equal sides and that a total of $40$ metres of fencing was needed, how long is each side of the plot?

x x x - 5 P = 40 m

Problems with systems: mixtures and two unknowns

When a problem has two independent quantities and two conditions, set up a system with $x$ and $y$ instead of struggling to fit it into a single letter.

Diagram of a coffee mixture showing the quantities in kilograms and the total price of the mixture 20 kg in total x = 5 kgy = 15 kg x + y = 2012x + 8y = 180

A water tank is filled by two taps. Tap A takes $6$ hours longer than tap B to fill the tank on its own. If both are opened at the same time, the tank fills in exactly $4$ hours. Calculate how long tap B would take to fill the tank on its own. (This problem requires solving a quadratic equation).
