Non-linear systems

You already know the non-linear systems from 4th ESO: a line with a parabola, or a pair of numbers known by their sum and product. In Bachillerato they appear with exponentials, logarithms and radicals, but the strategy is still the same: rearrange the simplest equation and substitute.

Before you start, make sure you know: Systems of non-linear equations (4th ESO)

What a non-linear system is

Visual comparison between a linear equation that is easy to rearrange and a non-linear equation with a product of unknowns. x − y = 4(linear, easy to rearrange) x · y = 12(non-linear)

Discussion with a parameter: tangency

A line can cut a curve at two points, at one point (if it is tangent) or at none. When the system has a parameter, discussing how many real solutions it has is equivalent to studying the discriminant of the resulting quadratic equation.

Three positions of a line relative to a circle according to the number of solutions: secant with two points of intersection, tangent with a single point of contact, and exterior with no points of intersection. two intersections2 solutions tangent: one intersection1 solution no intersection0 solutions
