Powers
A streamer's video is shared by 1 person, and every hour the number of people who have shared it triples. How many will have shared it after 5 hours? Writing $3 \times 3 \times 3 \times 3 \times 3$ is tedious and easy to get wrong. That is what powers are for: a short way to write repeated multiplication.
What a power is
Move the sliders and watch how powers grow.
A power with exponent 2 is called a square and one with exponent 3 is called a cube. This is no coincidence: $7^2$ is the area of a square with side 7, and $2^3$ is the volume of a cube with edge 2.

Growth problems and prime factors
When something doubles, triples, etc., at each step, the amount is a power: if it starts at 1 and triples $n$ times, there are $3^n$. If it starts at $3^4$ and triples every hour, after $h$ hours there are $3^4 \cdot 3^h = 3^{4+h}$.
In the prime factorization of a number, the powers show how many times each prime appears. For the GCF you take the common primes with the smallest exponent, and for the LCM all the primes with the largest exponent.

In an archaeological excavation near ancient Mesopotamia, a ceremonial structure made of cubic stone blocks has been found. The structure follows a pattern of "nested cubes". The first level is a cube of $2 \times 2 \times 2$ blocks.
