At the science fair in Querétaro, Ximena launches a water rocket from a platform. Its height in meters, after $t$ seconds, is $h(t) = -5t^2 + 25t + 2$. With a single formula she can find the height at any moment. Will the rocket be higher at 3 seconds or at 4? You'll solve it by the end of this page.

What a polynomial is

A monomial is a product of a number (the coefficient) and letters with exponents: $-7x^4$, $\frac{2}{3}ab^2$, $5$. Its degree is the sum of the exponents of the variable part. Two monomials are like terms if they have the same variable part: $5x^2y$ and $-x^2y$ are; $5x^2y$ and $5xy^2$ are not.

$$P(x) = -5x^4 + \frac{2}{3}x^2 - x + 9$$
  • Degree of the polynomial: the highest degree among its terms (here, $4$).

  • Leading coefficient: the coefficient of the highest-degree term ($-5$).

  • Constant term: the term without $x$ ($9$).

  • By number of terms: monomial (1), binomial (2), trinomial (3).

Breakdown of the polynomial into four boxes that identify each term and its degree. P(x) = −5x⁴degree 4 +⅔x²degree 2 −xdegree 1 +9constant

  2. b) What is the name of the term that has no variable ($-8$)?
  3. c) How many terms does it have? Based on the number of terms, is it a monomial, binomial or trinomial?

Ordering and completing

A polynomial is complete if it has every degree from the highest one down to the constant term. If any is missing, it is incomplete. To operate in columns it helps to write a $0$ wherever a degree is missing: $x^3 - 4 = x^3 + 0x^2 + 0x - 4$.

Numerical value and roots

The numerical value of $P(x)$ at $x = a$ is written $P(a)$: substitute $x$ with $a$ (in parentheses) and calculate, following the order of operations.

The rocket formula, $h(t) = -5t^2 + 25t + 2$, is evaluated the same way:

A pizza delivery driver earns a fixed wage of $300$ pesos for each evening of work, plus an extra $60$ pesos for each home delivery order. The expression that calculates their earnings is $G = 300 + 60x$, where $x$ is the number of orders.

Calculate the numerical value of their earnings (the total amount they will receive) if one evening they deliver $8$ orders.

Adding and subtracting polynomials

You add or subtract only the like terms (those with the same variable part): you operate on their coefficients and the variable part stays the same.

The perimeter of a figure is the sum of its sides: if a rectangular frame is $(2x + 3)$ long and $(x + 1)$ wide, the perimeter is $2(2x + 3) + 2(x + 1) = 6x + 8$.

Multiplying polynomials

You use the distributive property: each term of the first factor is multiplied by each term of the second, and then the like terms are combined. When multiplying letters, you add the exponents: $x \cdot x^2 = x^3$.

Multiplications show up when calculating areas. A rectangle with base $x + 5$ and height $x + 2$ has area $(x + 5)(x + 2) = x^2 + 7x + 10$:

Rectangle with base x plus 5 and height x plus 2 divided into four regions with areas x squared, 5x, 2x, and 10. x² 5x 2x 10 x 5 x 2

For a shaded region, subtract: area of the large figure minus area of the hole. Put the area of the hole in parentheses before subtracting.

Special products

Some products come up so often that it is worth remembering their results.

Why? $(a + b)^2 = (a + b)(a + b) = a^2 + ab + ba + b^2$, and the two middle terms add up to $2ab$. In a square with side $a + b$ you can see a square $a^2$, a square $b^2$, and two rectangles $ab$.

Common factor and factoring

Factoring is the reverse of multiplying: writing a polynomial as a product. The first step is to take out the common factor: the greatest number that divides all the coefficients, times the common letter with its lowest exponent.

Special products can also be read backward: $x^2 + 6x + 9 = (x + 3)^2$ and $4x^2 - 25 = (2x + 5)(2x - 5)$. If there is a common factor, take it out first: $3x^3 - 12x = 3x(x^2 - 4) = 3x(x + 2)(x - 2)$.
