First-Degree Equations

A 200-peso bill pays for 3 identical notebooks and you get 20 pesos in change. How much does each notebook cost? You have known how to set up $3x + 20 = 200$ since Secondary Year 1. Now you are going to solve longer equations, with parentheses and denominators at the same time, and discover what happens when an equation has no solution or when every number is a solution.

Equations and the Balance Scale

If the equality is true for any value of the letter, like $x + x = 2x$, it is called an identity. It is not an equation you need to solve: it is always true.

The golden rule: whatever you do to one side, you do to the other. That way the scale stays balanced.

Parentheses and Denominators Together

Longer equations have parentheses and fractions at the same time. This is the usual order (if the parentheses are inside the numerators, as in the example, it is easier to remove the denominators first and then the parentheses):

Problems with First-Degree Equations

Many problems turn into an equation: ages, sharing, perimeters, vehicles that meet, faucets that fill a tank, mixtures, digits of a number. Steps: choose what $x$ is, express the other quantities in terms of $x$, set up the equality, solve, and check against the problem statement.

Diagram of the problem: three games plus two passes add up to the total paid. total = 700 pesos 3 games = 3x 2 passes = x 3x + x = 700 → x = 175

Meeting Problems with Staggered Departures

When two people approach each other, the distance each one travels is $d = v \cdot t$, and the sum of the two distances is the total distance. If one leaves earlier, that person has been traveling longer: call $t$ the time of the one who leaves later and add the head start to the other.

Combined Work: Reasoning with Rates

If a faucet fills a tank in 3 hours, in 1 hour it fills $\dfrac{1}{3}$ of the tank. That fraction per hour is its rate. Filling faucets add their rates and a drain subtracts its rate. In $t$ hours, the amount filled is (rate) $\cdot\, t$, and when the tank is full the total is $1$.

Mixtures and Percentages

In a mixture, the amount of pure substance is (percent) $\times$ (amount of solution). When you add water, the amount of pure substance does not change; what changes is the total. That is the equality you set up: pure substance before = pure substance after.

Digits of a Number

In a three-digit number, each digit is worth an amount depending on its place. If $c$ is the hundreds digit, $d$ the tens digit, and $u$ the ones digit, the number equals $100c + 10d + u$. For example, $482 = 100(4) + 10(8) + 2$. To set up the problem, express the three digits using a single letter: the one for the digit the others are compared to (usually the ones digit).
