Square Roots
Valeria's bedroom is square and has an area of $16$ m². How long is each wall? You need the opposite operation of squaring: the square root.
What a square root is
Change the area and watch how the side of the square changes.
Zero is also a perfect square: $\sqrt{0} = 0$. Negative numbers do not have a real square root.

Roots in problems about squares
Many problems ask you to build a square with a certain number of pieces: students in a photo, blocks in a video game, drones in a show. You always do the same thing: find the largest perfect square that does not exceed the number available.
Look at the following dot pattern. Which natural number represents the total number of dots? What is its square root?

Between which numbers a root lies
Not all numbers are perfect squares. Even so, you can estimate their root: it lies between two consecutive integers.
For example, for $70$: the integer root is $8$ and the remainder is $70 - 64 = 6$.
State between which two consecutive natural numbers the following square roots lie. Look at the example: Example: $\sqrt{10}$ lies between $3$ and $4$ because $3^2=9$…

Knowing that a natural number $N$ has an integer square root $a = 45$, calculate the largest value that this number $N$ can take and what its remainder is in that case. Take into account the property that relates the remainder to the integer root so that the approximation is maximal. In the figure (not exactly to scale in the gaps) you have the square of side $a$ and the next square, of side $a+1$.

Determine, without using a calculator and reasoning your answer by calculating squares of nearby numbers, between which two consecutive decimal numbers with one decimal place (for example, $4.4$ and $4.5$) the square root of $75$ lies.
(Example: $\sqrt{20}$ is between $4.4$ and $4.5$ because $4.4^2 = 19.36$ and $4.5^2 = 20.25$).
How to calculate a root step by step
When the number is large and you don't recognize the perfect square, you can use the square root algorithm, which works with pairs of digits.
To find an unknown digit that makes a perfect square, bound it with nearby squares (for example, $80^2 = 6400$ and $90^2 = 8100$), test, and then check with the algorithm.
Find the value of the digit $k$ so that the number $7\,05k$ is a perfect square. Once found, calculate the square root of this number using the step-by-step algorithm.…

Combined operations with roots
The square root is calculated at the same level as exponents in the order of operations. If the radicand is an operation, it is worked out first, as if the root were a set of parentheses.
