Least Common Multiple

Before you start, make sure you know: Multiples, divisors, and divisibility rules (Secondary Year 1)
Before you start, make sure you know: Prime numbers and prime factorization (Secondary Year 1)

At the bus station in Puebla, one maintenance alarm sounds every $12$ minutes, another every $15$, and another every $20$. All three have just sounded together. When will they sound at the same time again? The least common multiple (LCM) solves this.

What the LCM is

Look at the multiples of $4$ and $6$ on two number lines. They coincide at $12$, at $24$, and so on. The first one that coincides is the LCM.

Number lines comparing the multiples of 4 and 6 with their first coincidences at 12 and 24 multiples of 4 multiples of 6 4 8 12 16 20 24 6 12 18 24 12 = LCM(4, 6) (24 is also a common multiple, but not the least)

This listing method works well with small numbers. If one number is a multiple of the other, the LCM is the larger of the two: $\text{mcm}(5, 20) = 20$, because $20$ is already a multiple of $5$.

In a platform video game, your character gets a protective shield every $4$ levels and a speed boost every $6$ levels. If you have just started the game at level $0$, at which level will both rewards coincide for the first time? Calculate the result by finding the first multiples of each number.

The number line shows the first jump of each reward. Continue the jumps yourself until you find the first level where they coincide.

Calculating the LCM by prime factorization

Listing multiples is slow with large numbers. The fast method: break each number into prime factors and take all the factors, common and non-common, raised to the highest exponent.

Calculating the LCM of 12 and 18 by taking the highest exponent of each prime factor 12 = 2² · 3 18 = 2 · 3² LCM = 2² · 3² = 36 highest exponent of each factor

Calculate the lowest common multiple of the numbers $12$ and $18$ in your exercise book using prime factorisation. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Find the prime factorisation of both numbers.

  2. Identify the common and non-common factors raised to the highest power.

  3. Multiply them to obtain the $m.c.m.(12, 18)$.

Applications of the LCM

The LCM shows up whenever something repeats with a period and you ask when it coincides.

Diagram of two ships with periodic departures that coincide again at the LCM of their periods Ship A every 24 days Ship B every 35 days LCM(24, 35) = 840 days (they coincide again after 840 days)

Some problems ask for more than the first meeting:

  • Second coincidence: it is double the LCM. If two alarms coincide at $8:00$ and the LCM is $180$ minutes, the second time is $360$ minutes later.

  • How many times they coincide in a span of time: divide the available time by the LCM and take the whole-number part. With an LCM of $60$ days in $365$ days, there are $6$ coincidences ($6 \times 60 = 360$).

  • Laps for each one: divide the LCM by each one's period. If the LCM is $24$ and one takes $6$, it makes $24 \div 6 = 4$ laps.

  • Different units: convert everything to the same unit before calculating. For example, $1$ hour and $15$ minutes is $75$ minutes.

It is also useful for solving conditions with a remainder. If a number leaves remainder $3$ when divided by $6$, $8$, and $10$, then that number minus $3$ is a common multiple of $6$, $8$, and $10$. First you calculate the LCM and then add $3$.

When a problem relates the LCM to the GCF, remember that for two numbers $a$ and $b$ it holds that $\text{mcm}(a, b) \times \text{MCD}(a, b) = a \times b$. If you know the product and the GCF, the LCM comes from dividing.
