The Pythagorean Theorem

Before you start, make sure you know: Triangles (Secondary Year 1)
Before you start, make sure you know: Square root (Secondary Year 1)

A 5 m ladder leans against a wall, with its foot 3 m from the base of the wall. How high up does it reach? The ladder, the wall, and the ground form a right triangle, and more than 2,000 years ago Pythagoras discovered a fixed relationship among its three sides: if you know two of them, you can always find the third.

The Pythagorean theorem

In a right triangle, the two sides that form the right angle are called the legs ($a$ and $b$); the side opposite the right angle, the longest one, is the hypotenuse ($c$).

Look at the drawing: the square built on the hypotenuse has exactly the same area as the two squares on the legs put together. That is why the formula works.

It also works the other way around: if the sides of a triangle satisfy $a^2 + b^2 = c^2$ (with $c$ the longest), then the triangle is a right triangle.

Pythagoras inside other figures

Many figures hide right triangles. If you find them, the theorem gives you the missing length.

  • Rhombus: its diagonals are perpendicular and cross at their midpoints; the side is the hypotenuse of a triangle whose legs are the halves of the diagonals.

  • Isosceles triangle: the altitude to the base splits it into two equal halves, and forms a right triangle with half the base and one of the equal sides.

  • Regular hexagon: it is divided into six equilateral triangles; the apothem is the altitude of one of them.

Pythagoras and similarity

Many problems combine the two topics: Pythagoras gives a missing side, and similarity (scale factor $k$) carries that side over to another figure. If a figure is enlarged or reduced by a factor $k$, all its lengths (sides, diagonals, perimeters) are multiplied by $k$, and its areas by $k^2$.
