Table of a Function

Before you start, make sure you know: Algebraic expressions (Secondary Year 1)
Before you start, make sure you know: Operations with integers (Secondary Year 1)

A concert ticket costs $\$300$. If you go with 1, 2, or 9 friends, how much do you pay in total? The fastest way is to organize it in a table: one row with the number of tickets and another with the price. The table is another way of looking at the same function as the formula or the graph.

The Table of Values

Horizontal table of values relating the number of tickets to the total cost in pesos. Tickets (x) Cost (y) 12310 3006009003000

For a table to represent a function, each value of $x$ must correspond to exactly one value of $y$. If the same $x$ appears with two different $y$ values, it is not a function.

A cyclist travels along a route at a constant speed of $20$ km/h. The following table shows the distance covered depending on the elapsed time:

Time in hours ($x$) 0.5 1 1.5 2 3
Distance in km ($y$) $10$ $20$ $30$ $40$ $60$

From the table, state:

  • a) Which is the independent variable and which is the dependent variable?

  • b) Is it a continuous or discrete function? Reason your answer.

From the Formula to the Table

If you know the formula, filling in the table means substituting $x$ with each requested value and calculating.

Often you have to build the formula from a problem. You look for what stays fixed and what changes. For example, an electric scooter charges $\$40$ to unlock it and $\$10$ per minute: $y = 10x + 40$. The $40$ is what you pay even when $x = 0$.

The Constant Product: Inverse Proportionality

If $12$ people split the rent, each pays less than if there were only $3$. When one quantity goes up and the other goes down in such a way that their product doesn't change, the relationship is inverse proportionality: $x \cdot y = k$, that is, $y = \dfrac{k}{x}$.
