The Set of Integers
How many integers satisfy "its absolute value is less than or equal to $4$"? And what if they also have to be greater than $-2$? You already know what an integer is. Now you will treat integers as part of a set, with conditions that combine.
From ℕ to ℤ
In a video game you gain points or lose them; in a submarine you go up or down relative to sea level. Signed numbers are used to describe this kind of situation.
Two more ideas you will use all the time:

Complete the following table in your exercise book, filling in the blanks so that each row is consistent with the definition of an integer, its opposite, and its absolute value:
| Number ($z$) | Opposite ($Op(z)$) | Absolute Value ($|z|$) |
|---|---|---|
| $-12$ | ||
| $+7$ | ||
| $5$ (If $z$ is positive) | ||
| $9$ (If $z$ is negative) | ||
| $Op(-3)$ |
Integers on the number line
On the number line, numbers increase toward the right. Of two integers, the greater one is the one farther to the right. So any positive number is greater than any negative number, and between two negatives the greater one is the one closer to $0$: $-2 > -8$.
Distance and the equidistant point
The distance between two integers is the absolute value of their difference. A point is the same distance from both endpoints when it is exactly at the midpoint: you move from the left endpoint by half the distance.

In a high-mountain town, the weather service records the following temperatures throughout a winter's day:
-
At 06:00: $-8$ ºC.
-
At 12:00: The temperature has risen by $10$ ºC compared to 06:00.
-
At 20:00: The temperature has fallen by $5$ ºC compared to 12:00.
-
At 00:00: The temperature is the opposite of the one recorded at 12:00.
Represent these four temperatures on a number line and order them from lowest to highest using the $<$ symbol.
Opposite and absolute value: always, sometimes, or never?
When a statement is about "all integers," to be true it must hold always. To show it is false, a single counterexample is enough.

Integers in real-life situations
Integers show up whenever there is a reference point: sea level, the street-level floor, year $0$ of the calendar, $0$ °C. Positive values lie on one side and negative values on the other.
