The Language of Algebra
A delivery company charges a base fee $B$ plus $2.50$ pesos for each kilogram. How much does it cost to send a package of $w$ kilograms? The answer, $B + 2.5w$, works for any package, without repeating the calculation each time. That is what the language of algebra gives you.
Phrases and Expressions
An algebraic expression combines numbers and letters using operations. The letter (variable) represents a quantity that can change. Translating means going phrase by phrase:
| Phrase | Expression |
|---|---|
| A number increased by 150 | $x + 150$ |
| A number decreased by 40 | $p - 40$ |
| Three times a number | $3y$ |
| Half of a number | $\dfrac{d}{2}$ |
| One fifth of a number | $\dfrac{x}{5}$ |
| The square of a number | $x^2$ |
You can also translate the other way: from the expression to the phrase. It is the same skill in the opposite direction. For example, $x - 5$ is "a number decreased by five units" and $2x + 5$ is "twice a number plus five units."

Parts of a Monomial and Numerical Value
A monomial is a product of a number and letters with exponents. It has:
-
Coefficient: the number that multiplies. In $7x^2$ it is $7$.
-
Literal part: the letters with their exponents. In $7x^2$ it is $x^2$.
-
Degree: the sum of the exponents of the literal part. In $7x^2$ it is $2$.
A monomial with no letters, like $-5$, has degree $0$. If no coefficient is visible, it is $1$ (or $-1$ if there is a minus sign): in $-ab^3$ the coefficient is $-1$ and the degree is $1 + 3 = 4$.
An expression with several monomials separated by $+$ or $-$ has several terms. The one with no letter is the constant term: in $7x^2y - 5x + 3$ there are $3$ terms and the constant term is $3$.
Like monomials have the same literal part (even if the coefficient changes): $5x^2$, $\frac14 x^2$, and $x^2$ are like terms; so are $3y$ and $8y$.
The numerical value is found by substituting a number for the letter and calculating. For $x^2 - 5$ with $x = 3$: $3^2 - 5 = 9 - 5 = 4$.

Perimeters, Areas, and Volumes
The measurements of figures are written with letters when we don't know the sides.

Patterns and Consecutive Numbers
To describe figure number $n$ of a sequence, count how many elements each step adds. If figure $1$ has $4$ dots and each new one adds $3$, the general term is $a_n = 3n + 1$: it starts at $1$ and adds $3$ for each figure.
When the figure grows in layers, each layer adds more elements than the previous one and the total is no longer linear: $n^2$ appears.
For related numbers, the first one is named with a letter and the others are written using it:
| Description | Expression |
|---|---|
| Any number | $n$ |
| The next one | $n + 1$ |
| The previous one | $n - 1$ |
| Three consecutive numbers | $n,\ n+1,\ n+2$ |
| An even number | $2n$ |
| An odd number | $2n + 1$ |
Observe the following sequence of patterns made with dots and determine the general term $a_n$ that allows you to calculate the number of dots needed for any pattern $n$.
