Operations with polynomials

Before you start, make sure you know: Monomials and operations with monomials (Secondary Year 1)
Before you start, make sure you know: Properties of exponents (Secondary Year 1)

In a strategy video game you have two chests. The first one contains $P(x) = 5x^2 + 3x - 4$ items (depending on their rarity $x$) and the second one contains $Q(x) = 2x^2 - 5x + 8$. To find out how many you have in total, you need to add the two polynomials. How is it done? You'll find out on this page.

Elements and numerical value

Before operating with a polynomial, identify its degree (the greatest exponent with a nonzero coefficient), its leading coefficient (the coefficient of the highest-degree term), its constant term (the one with no variable), and how many terms it has.

To calculate its numerical value, substitute $x$ with the number and operate following the order of operations. For example, if $A(x) = 3x^3 - 5x^2 + 2x - 7$, then $A(2) = 3 \cdot 8 - 5 \cdot 4 + 2 \cdot 2 - 7 = 24 - 20 + 4 - 7 = 1$.

If a coefficient is unknown and you are given the numerical value, you substitute and get an equation with that unknown.

Adding and subtracting polynomials

You add (or subtract) the like terms, that is, the ones with the same variable part (the same variable with the same exponent). It helps to line them up in columns:

Sum of two polynomials arranged in vertical columns according to the degree of their terms. degree 2degree 1degree 0 P(x) =5x²+3x− 4 Q(x) =2x²−5x+ 8 P + Q =7x²−2x+ 4 each column, one degree

So the two chests add up to $7x^2 - 2x + 4$ items. We've now answered the question from the beginning.

In a strategy video game, your inventory is divided into two chests. The contents of the first chest are given by the polynomial $P(x) = 5x^2 + 3x - 4$ and that of the second by $Q(x) = 2x^2 - 5x + 8$, where $x$ represents the rarity level of the items. Monomial times polynomial

Polynomial times polynomial

Each term of the first polynomial multiplies each term of the second, and then the like terms are combined. A rectangle divided into parts shows this very well:

Geometric representation of the product of two binomials by splitting the area into four rectangles. 2x+3 x+1 2x²3x 2x3 (2x + 3)(x + 1) = 2x² + 3x + 2x + 3 = 2x² + 5x + 3 4 rectangles = 4 products

When there are several operations combined, follow the order of operations: first the products and then the additions and subtractions. If there is a minus sign in front of a parenthesis, change the sign of everything inside it.

The same method works for volumes. The volume of a rectangular prism (a box) is length $\times$ width $\times$ height: you multiply the three polynomials two at a time and combine like terms. For example, a box that is $x$ long, $x + 1$ wide, and $2$ tall has volume $x(x+1) \cdot 2 = 2x^2 + 2x$.

Special products

Some products come up so often that it's worth memorizing their results:

Why does the $2ab$ appear? Because $(a+b)^2 = (a+b)(a+b) = a^2 + ab + ba + b^2$, and the two middle terms are equal. A square with side $a+b$ splits into four pieces: a square of $a^2$, a square of $b^2$, and two rectangles of $a \times b$.

Square with side a plus b divided into a square of area a², a square of area b², and two rectangles of area ab. ab ab a²ab abb² (a + b)² = a² + ab + ab + b² = a² + 2ab + b²

Factoring out the common factor

It is the distributive property in reverse: if all the terms have something in common, you take it out and multiply it by a parenthesis.

$$4x^2 + 8x = 4x\,(x + 2)$$ Diagram of factoring out the common factor as the inverse operation of the distributive property. 4x·x + 4x·2 common factor = 4x(x + 2) GCF of the coefficients and variables with the lowest exponent

This is useful for simplifying algebraic fractions: you factor out the common factor in the numerator and denominator and cancel the equal factors. For example, $\dfrac{4x^2 + 8x}{2x} = \dfrac{4x(x+2)}{2x} = 2(x+2)$.
