Algebraic Expressions

At the school co-op you get paid $\$5$ for helping sell, and on top of that your aunt gives you a tip, but you don't know yet how much it will be. If you call the tip $x$, you can already write how much money you will have in total: $5 + x$. You don't know the number, but you already know the calculation. That is algebra.

Letters that hold a number

Think of the letter as a closed box: there is a number inside, but you can't see it. You can do math with the box without opening it.

The unknown x represented as a closed box containing an unknown number; adding 15 forms the expression x + 15. x closed box = a number we can't see (today it could be 3, tomorrow 7...) with x gems and 15 more x + 15

In the world of video games, it is very common to translate situations into mathematical language. If we let $x$ be the number of gems you have in a chest, express the following situations in algebraic language:

  • Triple the number of gems you have.

  • The number of gems you will have if you find 15 more.

  • The number of gems you have left after spending half on a skin.

  • Double your gems minus 5 that you owe to a friend.

Translating phrases into expressions

Each key word becomes an operation. These equivalences will help you:

Everyday language Algebraic language
Twice a number $2x$
Three times a number $3x$
Half of a number $\dfrac{x}{2}$
A number plus 5 $x + 5$
5 less than a number $x - 5$
The square of a number $x^2$
The next number after a number $x + 1$
The number before a number $x - 1$

You can also go the other way: from the expression to a phrase.

You can also translate percents and fractions. For example, a price $x$ increased by $10\%$ is $x + 0.10x$, and spending a quarter of $x$ pesos leaves $x - \dfrac{x}{4}$.

  • Adrián has 100 pesos less than triple what Lucía has.

  • If they combine their money and the municipality gives them an extra 400 pesos.

Perimeters with letters

The perimeter is the sum of all the sides, even if you don't know their measurements. If the length is $L$ and the width is $a$, the rectangle has two sides of each measure.

Rectangle with length L and width a, and its perimeter 2L + 2a. L a L · a Perimeter = 2L + 2a

If you also know that $L = 2a$, you substitute and simplify: $P = 2(2a) + 2a = 4a + 2a = 6a$.

For irregular figures, write each side with its expression, add them all, and combine the like terms.

Calculation of the numerical value by substituting n = 10 in 15n + 50 to get 200 pesos. 15n + 50 substitute n = 10 15(10) + 50 = 150 + 50 = 200 pesos

It also works with several letters: in $I = 10a + 5b - 2c$ with $a = 2$, $b = 3$, $c = 4$ you get $20 + 15 - 8 = 27$.

Patterns that depend on $n$

When a figure always grows by the same rule, you can describe any step with an expression in $n$. Try the slider:

With 1 square you need 4 matchsticks; with 2, 7; with 3, 10. Each new square adds 3 matchsticks and there is always one extra at the start: the rule is $3n + 1$.

To find where a number appears, you set the rule equal to that number. If $3n + 2 = 41$, then $3n = 39$ and $n = 13$.

Parts of a monomial and like terms

Expressions with a single term are called monomials. They have these parts:

Parts of the monomial 5x cubed: coefficient 5, variable part x cubed, and degree 3. 5 x³ coefficient variable part degree = 3 (sum of the exponents of the letters)

The degree of a monomial is the sum of the exponents of its variable part: $-ab^2$ has degree $1 + 2 = 3$, and a number by itself, like $-7$, has degree $0$.

Two monomials are like terms if they have the same variable part: $3x$ and $5x$ are; $3x$ and $3x^2$ are not. You can only add or subtract like terms, just as you can't add pesos and gems:

$$3x + 5x - x = (3 + 5 - 1)x = 7x$$

When there is a minus sign in front of a parenthesis, it changes the sign of everything inside: $-(2x + 5) = -2x - 5$. If there is a number in front, it multiplies everything: $3(x - 1) = 3x - 3$.

Multiplying and dividing monomials

To multiply monomials, multiply the coefficients and, for each letter, add the exponents: $(3x^2)(4x^3) = 12x^5$, because $x^2 \cdot x^3 = x \cdot x \cdot x \cdot x \cdot x$.

To divide, divide the coefficients and subtract the exponents: $\dfrac{10x^3y}{2x^3y} = 5$, since $x^3 \div x^3 = 1$.
