Monomials and Operations with Monomials

In a video game you collect gems worth $x$ points each. On the first level you get $5x$ gems, on the second another $8x$, and on the third you lose $3x$ to a spell. How many gems do you have at the end? To find out, you need to work with monomials.

What a monomial is

Diagram of the monomial −5x²y showing its coefficient −5, its variable part x²y, and its degree 3, which comes from adding the exponents 2 and 1. −5 x²y coefficient variable part degree = 2 + 1 = 3 (y has exponent 1, even though it isn't written)

Not everything with letters is a monomial: $\frac{4}{x}$ is not (the letter is in the denominator) and $\sqrt{x}$ is not either (the exponent is not a natural number). $2 + a$ is not one either: it has two terms separated by a $+$, so it is a polynomial.

Two monomials are like monomials if they have exactly the same variable part: $4x^2$ and $2x^2$ are; $4x^2$ and $4x$ are not, even though they look similar.

Dividing monomials

The divisor cannot be zero. In the examples we will assume that the letters we divide by are nonzero. If subtracting exponents gave a negative one, the result would no longer be a monomial of the kind we study here.
