Quadrilaterals
The screen of your cell phone, a soccer goal, a traffic sign, a paper kite: all of them are four-sided figures, called quadrilaterals. Depending on their sides, angles, and diagonals, they are grouped into families. By the end of this page you will be able to say which family each one belongs to.

In a geometry exam, Lucía is asked to calculate the missing angle of a paper kite (a quadrilateral with two pairs of equal adjacent sides). The unequal angles measure $110^\circ$ (top) and $40^\circ$ (bottom). If the other two angles are equal to each other, how much does each of them measure? In building a skatepark ramp, a structure shaped like a right-angled trapezium is used. The obtuse angle of the structure measures $125^\circ$. Calculate the measure of all the interior angles of this trapezium and justify your answer based on the properties of parallel lines cut by a transversal.
The diagonals of quadrilaterals
Diagonals let you recognize each quadrilateral without measuring the sides.
| Quadrilateral | Diagonals |
|---|---|
| Square | equal, perpendicular, bisect each other (cross at the midpoint) |
| Rectangle | equal, not perpendicular, bisect each other |
| Rhombus | unequal, perpendicular, bisect each other |
| Rhomboid | unequal, not perpendicular, bisect each other |
| Isosceles trapezoid | equal, not perpendicular (in general), do not cross at the midpoint |
| Kite | perpendicular; only one is cut at its midpoint |
Notice a very useful rule: in every parallelogram the diagonals cross at their midpoint, and in the other quadrilaterals they do not.

An architect is designing a rhombus-shaped window. To ensure structural stability, they have placed two wooden slats matching the diagonals of the rhombus. The longer diagonal measures $160\text{ cm}$ and the shorter diagonal measures $120\text{ cm}$. When crossing, the diagonals divide the rhombus into four identical triangles.

Work out which quadrilateral is being described in each case, based on its diagonals:
-
"My diagonals are equal and intersect perpendicularly at their midpoint."
-
"My diagonals are equal, intersect at their midpoint, but are not perpendicular."
-
"My diagonals are not equal, but they are perpendicular and intersect at their midpoint."
-
"I have two parallel sides and two equal diagonals, but they do not intersect at their midpoints."
Justify your answer by making a small sketch of the diagonals for each case.
Construction with a straightedge and compass
The properties of the diagonals are useful for constructing quadrilaterals. In a rhombus, the diagonals are perpendicular and cross at their midpoint: it is enough to draw one diagonal, its perpendicular bisector, and mark the other diagonal on it.
Symmetry and midpoints
An axis of symmetry divides a figure into two halves that coincide when folded. The square has $4$ axes (two diagonals and two lines that join midpoints of opposite sides), and all of them cross at its center. The rectangle has $2$ and the rhombus also has $2$ (its diagonals).
There is a very nice result: if you join in order the midpoints of the sides of any quadrilateral, a parallelogram is always formed. Its area is half the area of the original quadrilateral.
