First-Degree Equations

At recess, Diego keeps his marbles in $2$ identical bags and has $3$ loose ones in his pocket. In all, he has $15$ marbles. How many marbles are in each bag? Without realizing it, you have just set up an equation: $2x + 3 = 15$. Solving it means finding what $x$ is worth without tipping the "balance scale."

What an equation is

Parts of the equation 2x + 3 = 15, showing the left side, the right side, the unknown, and its solution. 2x + 3 = 15 left sideright side unknown: x solution: x = 6 (each bag, 6 marbles)

Checking a solution is easy: you substitute the number for the letter and see whether both sides come out the same. For $x = 6$: $2 \times 6 + 3 = 15$ ✓. For $x = 5$: $2 \times 5 + 3 = 13 \neq 15$ ✗, so $5$ is not a solution.

You can also set up an equation from a sentence. For example, "if you add $12$ to my number you get $35$" is written $x + 12 = 35$.

The language of equations allows us to solve mysteries. Imagine you are playing "Guess my number" with a friend. Your friend tells you:

"If you add $12$ to my secret number, the result is $35$".

Translate this sentence into algebraic language, letting $x$ be the secret number, and write the corresponding equation.

The balance scale: properties of equality

Think of a balance scale in equilibrium: if you remove or add the same amount on both pans, it stays balanced. That is the golden rule for solving equations: whatever you do to one side, do the same to the other.

Here is how to solve $2x + 3 = 15$:

$2x + 3 - 3 = 15 - 3 \ \Rightarrow\ 2x = 12 \ \Rightarrow\ \dfrac{2x}{2} = \dfrac{12}{2} \ \Rightarrow\ x = 6$

As a shortcut, people often say that what is added moves to the other side by subtracting, and what multiplies moves by dividing (and vice versa). It is the same as applying the inverse operation on both sides.

Equations with the unknown on both sides

Sometimes there is an $x$ on both sides, as in $5x + 2 = 2x + 14$. The idea is the same: use the properties of equality to gather the $x$ terms on one side and the numbers on the other.

Equations with parentheses

When the equation has parentheses, the first step is to remove them by multiplying each term inside by the number in front (the distributive property).

Step-by-step solution of an equation with parentheses, applying the distributive property and grouping terms. 1. Remove parentheses 2. x on one side, numbers on the other 3. Simplify and solve Always check at the end by substituting into the original equation

If there are parentheses inside others (brackets), start with the innermost ones and simplify each side before moving terms.
