Representing Integers on the Number Line
An explorer is searching for treasure buried along a straight path. The clue says it is $5$ units from the point $-2$. What number could it be at? With the number line, clues like this can be solved just by looking at a drawing.
Placing integers on the line
On the number line, $0$ is the reference point. Positive numbers go to its right and negative numbers to its left. This is how temperatures below zero, depths below sea level, or negative balances are represented.
Two numbers with the same absolute value but different signs, like $+3$ and $-3$, are opposites: they are the same distance from $0$, one on each side.
Drag the point and watch how its position and its sign change.
When the numbers are large (like $-15$, $+25$, or $-20$), there isn't room for a mark for every unit. Choose a scale: for example, each mark is worth $5$ units. What matters is that all the marks are the same distance apart and that the scale is the same along the whole line.

Opposites, absolute value, and displacements
The absolute value of a number, $|a|$, is its distance from $0$. That's why $|+3| = 3$ and $|-3| = 3$. The opposite of $a$ is $-a$: the number on the other side of $0$, at the same distance.
To answer "where does it end up?" after a movement, start from the initial position and move to the right (if it goes up or you add) or to the left (if it goes down or you subtract). On a vertical line, up is positive and down is negative.

A thermal inspection drone makes the following movements along the vertical axis of an industrial chimney. If we consider the top of the chimney to be at $0$ meters:
-
It starts at a height of $+12$ m.
-
It descends $15$ meters to inspect a crack.
-
It climbs $6$ meters again to take a reading.
Represent the path on a vertical line and mark the final position of the drone with a highlighted dot. What height is it at relative to the top of the chimney?
Distance between two points
The distance between two points on the line is the length of the segment that joins them. To find it, you count how many units separate one point from the other, or you calculate the absolute value of their difference: $|a - b|$.
If the points are on opposite sides of $0$, you add their distances from $0$: $6 + 9 = 15$. That's the same as $|9 - (-6)| = 15$.

Three scientists are studying an underwater volcano. Their positions relative to sea level ($0$ m) are:
-
Researcher A: Is in a submarine at $-450$ meters.
-
Researcher B: Is at the summit of the volcano, $+150$ meters above sea level.

Researcher C: Is on a boat at $0$ meters.

A surveillance drone moves along a horizontal axis. Its charging base is at point $0$. It makes the following consecutive movements:
-
It starts at the base and moves to point $+7$.
-
From there, it moves back $12$ units.
-
Finally, it moves to a position $P$ such that the total distance travelled from the start is $25$ units.
If the drone always moves in a straight line, at which integer on the line is point $P$ located? Is there more than one possible solution? Represent it graphically.

The midpoint of a segment is the point that is exactly the same distance from both of its endpoints. In geometry it is found with a straightedge and compass; on the number line it is calculated.

A historian is creating a digital timeline. They define year $0$ as the time of a great discovery.
-
The Alpha civilisation emerged in year $-450$ and lasted for $300$ years.
-
The Beta civilisation began just as Alpha ended and lasted twice as long.
-
The Gamma civilisation is placed on the line such that its starting year is the midpoint between the start of Alpha and the end of Beta.
Represent the start and end points of each civilisation on a number line (using a suitable scale, for example, 1 unit = 100 years). In which year did the Gamma civilisation begin?
Points that meet a condition
Sometimes you aren't given the number, but clues about its distance from another point or about its absolute value. You solve it by marking on the line the points that meet each clue and keeping the ones that meet all of them.
