The concept of a fraction

You eat three fourths of a cake. Your video game download is five eighths complete. You spend two fifths of your study time on math. All of these are fractions: numbers that describe parts. How are they written, what do they mean, and how do you use them to calculate with a quantity? You will find out here.

Numerator and denominator

Circle divided into four quadrants with two shaded, pointing out the numerator 2 and the denominator 4 of the fraction. 2 4 ← numerator: the shaded parts ← denominator: how many parts in all

Play with the numerator and the denominator and watch how the picture changes.
