Triangles
Sheet-metal roofs, transmission towers, bridge frames, and even the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacán have triangles hidden in them. Why? Because a triangle does not deform: if you push on a square made of rods, it turns into a rhombus; a triangle made of rods stays firm. On this page you will see what triangles are like, when they can be built, and how to draw them.
Elements and the sum of the angles
An exterior angle is formed by extending a side. Together with its interior angle it adds up to $180^\circ$ (they are supplementary). It is also equal to the sum of the other two interior angles.

Angles of the isosceles triangle
In an isosceles triangle, the angles at the base (the ones at the ends of the different side) are equal. This lets you find everything from a single piece of information.
When the given information relates the angles to each other, it is best to use an equation.

Notable lines and points
There are four special lines in a triangle. The three lines of each type meet at a single point. Later you will learn how to draw them with straightedge and compass.
| Line | What it is | Point where the three meet |
|---|---|---|
| Altitude | Perpendicular from a vertex to the opposite side (or to its extension) | Orthocenter |
| Median | Joins a vertex to the midpoint of the opposite side | Centroid (center of gravity) |
| Perpendicular bisector | Perpendicular to a side through its midpoint | Circumcenter |
| Angle bisector | Divides an angle into two equal angles | Incenter |

If the median coming from vertex $A$ has a total length of $12 \text{ cm}$, calculate the length of the two segments into which point $G$ divides this median. Perimeter and area
The perimeter is the sum of the sides. For the area you need a base and its height (perpendicular to it).
When a triangle is similar to another (same shape, different size), all its lengths change in the same proportion. If the base is reduced to one third, the height is too.

Observe the attached figure, which represents a metal piece. It consists of a large right-angled triangle and a smaller one inside it. Back to the beginning: a triangle does not deform because, once its three sides are fixed, its shape is determined. That is why it exists only if the triangle inequality holds, and why it is used in structures.
