The Chain Rule

Before you start, make sure you know: Differentiation rules (High School Year 2 (semesters 3 and 4))

A taco shop in Guadalajara advertises its specials on social media. Profit depends on the number of customers, the number of customers depends on how much is invested in advertising, and advertising changes month by month. Almost no real-world function is "simple": it is nested inside another one. To differentiate it you use the chain rule, which ties together all the derivatives you already know how to compute.

Composite function: outer and inner

A composite function is a function that takes the result of another function as its input. For example, $f(x) = (3x^2-5)^4$ does two things, in this order: first it computes $3x^2-5$, and then it raises the result to the fourth power.

Two-stage diagram: the variable x first enters the inner function u, and its result is passed to the outer function v. x → u(x) → v(u(x)) u(x): inner v( ): outer u acts first, then v

Why do you multiply by $u'$? If $x$ changes a little, $u$ changes by $u'$ times that change, and in turn $v$ changes by $v'$ times the change in $u$. The factors multiply, like the gears on a bicycle.

Roots, logarithms, and exponentials

The common functions have their "chain" versions. With $u=u(x)$:

All of them are the chain rule with a known outer function: $\sqrt{u}=u^{1/2}$ is differentiated as a power, $\ln$ has derivative $1/u$, and $e^u$ is its own derivative.

Sine, cosine, and logarithms in other bases

Some exercises use two more functions. Here you only need the chain version:

For the last formula, $\log_b u = \dfrac{\ln u}{\ln b}$ and $\ln b$ is just a constant in the denominator. For sine and cosine, angles are measured in radians.

Before differentiating, it helps to simplify using logarithm properties: $\ln\sqrt{A}=\tfrac12\ln A$, $\ln\dfrac{A}{B}=\ln A-\ln B$. It saves you a very long chain.

The chain rule in economic contexts

In economics, the derivative is a rate of change. If $C(x)$ is the cost of producing $x$ units, $C'(x)$ is the marginal cost: approximately how much the cost rises when you produce one more unit.

The chain rule with data about $f$ and $g$

Data diagram: at x = 1 the function g equals 3 and its derivative is 2; f' at 3 equals −4; the product gives the derivative of the composite, −8. x = 1 g'(1) = 2 g(1) = 3 f'(3) = −4 (f∘g)'(1) = (−4)(2) = −8 g f

If a negative value came out inside the root, $H$ would not be defined at that point (there is no real root) and therefore would not have a derivative either. If it came out $0$, the denominator vanishes and there is no finite derivative.

Two more uses: piecewise functions and implicit differentiation

Differentiable piecewise functions

For a function defined in pieces to be differentiable at the point where the formula changes, it must be continuous there (both pieces agree in value) and the derivatives of both pieces must agree at that point.

Implicit differentiation

Sometimes two variables are related by an equation without either one being solved for. You differentiate the entire equation with respect to one variable, treating the other as a function of it, so every term with $y$ gets the factor $y'$ (that is the chain rule).
