Curvature and Complete Function Sketching

A video goes viral: the view count keeps climbing every hour, but more and more slowly. The graph goes up and yet it keeps "flattening out." Which tool from calculus describes that shape? The second derivative. With it, and by chaining together everything you already know (domain, intercepts, asymptotes, monotonicity), you will be able to sketch the complete graph of a function.

Concave Up and Concave Down

Some problem statements on this page use "convex ($\cup$)" and "concave ($\cap$)." Here we will always use "concave up ($\cup$)" and "concave down ($\cap$)": rely on the picture and on the sign of $f''$.

Comparison between a concave up curve, where the second derivative is positive, and a concave down curve, where the second derivative is negative concave up (∪) f'' > 0 concave down (∩) f'' < 0

Why the second derivative? $f''$ is the derivative of $f'$, that is, it measures how the slope changes. If $f''>0$, the slope keeps increasing and the curve bends upward. If $f''<0$, the slope keeps decreasing and it bends downward.

Combining $f'$ and $f''$

The first derivative tells you whether the graph rises or falls; the second tells you how it bends. Together they give the four basic shapes:

$f'$ $f''$ Shape
$>0$ (rising) $>0$ rises and speeds up, like a ramp getting steeper
$>0$ (rising) $<0$ rises and flattens out, like the video at the start
$<0$ (falling) $>0$ falls and flattens out
$<0$ (falling) $<0$ falls and drops faster and faster

In addition, the second derivative can be used to classify extrema: if $f'(x_0)=0$ and $f''(x_0)>0$, there is a local minimum at $x_0$ (the curve is a cup there). If $f''(x0)<0$, there is a local maximum.

Finding Parameters from Conditions

Sometimes you are not given the complete function, but rather a family with unknown coefficients and clues about its graph. Each clue is an equation:

  • Point $(x_0, y_0)$ on the graph: $f(x_0)=y_0$.

  • Local extremum at $x_0$: $f'(x_0)=0$.

  • Inflection point at $x_0$: $f''(x_0)=0$ (and there must be a sign change).

  • Tangent line with slope $m$ at $x_0$: $f'(x_0)=m$.

For these functions the outline is the same; only two details change. The domain of $\ln(g(x))$ requires $g(x)>0$. And for horizontal asymptotes it helps to remember that $e^{-x}$ tends to $0$ as $x\to+\infty$, and does so so fast that it beats any power of $x$.
