Statistical Parameters of a Normal Distribution

Before you start, make sure you know: Systems of equations (High School Year 2 (semesters 3 and 4))

Ximena and Diego take different buses to get to high school. They both take $25$ minutes on average, but Diego gets there late much more often. Which number of the normal distribution explains the difference? We'll solve it at the end of section 2.

Notation and parameters: $X \sim N(\mu, \sigma)$

Bell curve centered at mu: the mean marks the center and the standard deviation marks how wide the bell curve is. μ (center) σ: how wide Two numbers, one bell curve
  • $\mu$ is the center of the bell curve: the average value.

  • $\sigma$ is the spread: how far the data tend to fall from the center.

A local municipality has analyzed the time taken by buses on the circular route to complete their journey. They have confirmed that this time follows a normal distribution with a mean of $25$ minutes and a standard deviation of $4$ minutes. Identify the statistical parameters of this distribution and write it using the abbreviated mathematical notation $X \sim N(\mu, \sigma)$.

A nutritionist claims that the daily sugar consumption of teenagers in a city follows a normal distribution. If we denote this variable as $X \sim N(45, 8)$, where the values are in grams:

  • What is the expected value of sugar consumption for a randomly chosen teenager?

  • Which parameter indicates whether the data are closely clustered around that value or widely spread out?

Comparing curves by their parameters

When two normal distributions measure the same thing, their parameters tell you which one has the higher average value and which one is more consistent.

Two bell curves with the same mean: the one with the smaller standard deviation is tall and narrow, the one with the larger standard deviation is low and wide. μ (same for both) small σ: precise large σ: irregular

Back to the start: Ximena and Diego have the same $\mu = 25$ min. Diego's bus has the larger $\sigma$, so his times are more spread out and sometimes he arrives very late.

The standard normal, symmetry, and useful $z$ values

To go from $X \sim N(\mu, \sigma)$ to $Z$ we standardize:

$$z = \frac{x - \mu}{\sigma}$$

This measures how many standard deviations $x$ is from the mean. The probability doesn't change: $P(X \le x) = P(Z \le z)$.

The bell curve is symmetric about $\mu$, so:

  • $P(X \le \mu) = P(X \ge \mu) = 0.5$.

  • $P(X > k) = 1 - P(X \le k)$.

  • $P(Z \le -z) = 1 - P(Z \le z)$.

  • $P(X \le \mu - d) = P(X \ge \mu + d)$ for any distance $d$.

These values of $P(Z \le z)$ will be useful throughout the page (the complete table is in the section on probabilities of the $N(0,1)$):

$z$ 0.44 0.52 0.58 1 1.04 1.28 1.5 1.645 1.96 2 2.33 3
$P(Z \le z)$ 0.6700 0.6985 0.7190 0.8413 0.8508 0.8997 0.9332 0.9500 0.9750 0.9772 0.9901 0.9987

When a requested probability falls between two values in the table, take the closest $z$: for example, for $0.90$ use $z \approx 1.28$.

Note: if a problem mentions an admissions exam, such as the university one, the procedure is the same.
