Local Maxima and Minima (Relative Extrema)

A video takes off on social media, reaches a peak in views, and then starts to decline. How can you find that peak without looking at the graph? When a function goes from increasing to decreasing, it reaches a local maximum; when it goes from decreasing to increasing, it reaches a local minimum. Here you use the sign of the derivative to locate and classify them.

Critical points

If the tangent line on the graph is horizontal at the peak or at the bottom, its slope $f'(x_0)$ equals zero: that is where the condition comes from.

First derivative test

When you are given the graph of $f'$, look for where it crosses the $x$-axis and see whether it goes from above to below (maximum of $f$) or from below to above (minimum of $f$).

If you are asked when a quantity $V(t)$ grows fastest, what you need to maximize is its rate of growth $V'(t)$: differentiate $V'$ and look for where $V''(t)=0$ with a sign change.

A content creator has analysed the evolution of views on their videos during the first 10 hours after publication. The function describing the cumulative number of views (in thousands) is given by $V(t) = -t^3 + 12t^2 + 60t$, where $t$ is the time in hours, with $t \in [0, 10]$.

Calculate the moment when the number of views is growing fastest. To do this, find the value of $t$ that maximises the growth rate function $V'(t)$ and determine the relative extrema of the original function $V(t)$ in that interval.

Extrema in profit, cost, and viral content

When you have to set up the function: constraint and limits

Sometimes the function is not given: you build it yourself. If one quantity is fixed (for example, the area), use it to solve for one variable and write the cost as a function of a single variable. In addition, the constraints of the problem set a closed interval, and you must also compare its endpoints.

With a model of the form $V(t)=t^2e^{-t/4}$ (viral content), differentiate using the product and chain rules, set the result equal to zero, and classify.

Absolute and local extrema

A local maximum is not always absolute: there may be another, higher peak, or the function may keep increasing elsewhere in the interval.

  • Closed interval $[a, b]$: absolute extrema exist if $f$ is continuous. They are found among the interior critical points and the values at $a$ and $b$; the greatest of those values is the absolute maximum and the least is the absolute minimum.

  • Open or infinite interval, such as $(0, +\infty)$: there is no endpoint to finish at, so you analyze the behavior of $f$ toward the boundaries (limits) and compare it with the local extremum.

This function is odd: $f(-x)=\dfrac{\ln(x^2)}{-x}=-f(x)$. That is why its graph for $x<0$ is the reflection through the origin: at $x=-e$ there is a local minimum with value $-\dfrac{2}{e}$.

Functions with exponentials, piecewise definitions, and parameters

To find parameters, translate each piece of data into an equation: "extremum at $x=a$" is $f'(a)=0$; "passes through $(a,b)$" is $f(a)=b$; "inflection point at $x=a$" requires $f''(a)=0$ and also that $f''$ changes sign at $a$ (that the concavity changes). $f''(a)=0$ alone is not enough: $f(x)=x^4$ has $f''(0)=0$ and there is no inflection. Solve the system and check with the test.

For piecewise functions, first check continuity at the joining point (the one-sided limits must match) and compare the one-sided derivatives. A point where the derivative does not exist, such as a corner, can also be a local maximum or minimum. With absolute value, first rewrite the function piece by piece according to the sign of the expression inside, and then differentiate each piece.
