Calculating Limits. Indeterminate Forms

Before you start, make sure you know: Properties of radicals and rationalizing denominators (High School Year 1 (semesters 1 and 2))

Ximena sells juices at an open-air market (a tianguis) in Puebla. Between the rent for her stand and the ingredients, the average cost per juice is $C(x)=\dfrac{8x+600}{x}$ pesos, where $x$ is the number of juices sold per day. If she sells a huge number, how much does each juice cost her? And what happens if she sells none? To answer, you need a fixed method for calculating limits: substitute, detect whether an indeterminate form appears, and apply the technique that resolves it. That is what we practice here.

Direct substitution

A limit describes the value that $f(x)$ approaches as $x$ approaches $a$, no matter what happens exactly at $x=a$. One way to see this is with a table. For $g(x)=\dfrac{x^2-1}{x-1}$ and $x$ near $1$:

$x$ $0.9$ $0.99$ $0.999$ $1.001$ $1.01$ $1.1$
$g(x)$ $1.9$ $1.99$ $1.999$ $2.001$ $2.01$ $2.1$

From both sides, $g(x)$ approaches $2$, even though $g(1)$ doesn't even exist. That is why we say $\displaystyle\lim_{x\to1} g(x)=2$.

You can also read it from a graph: the limit is the height the curve "points to," even if there is a hole at that point or the point sits somewhere else.

Graph of a line with a hole at the point (2, 4) and an isolated point at (2, 1): the limit at x = 2 is 4, but the value of the function is 1. 2 4 limit = 4 f(2) = 1

The $\frac00$ indeterminate form with polynomials

If substituting gives $\frac00$, that does not mean the limit doesn't exist: it means the numerator and denominator share a common factor $(x-a)$ that makes both vanish at once. Factor, cancel, and substitute again.

When the polynomial has degree 3 or higher, synthetic division finds the other factor. With a known root, you write the coefficients and then "bring down" and multiply.

The $\frac{k}{0}$ case: one-sided limits

If substitution gives a nonzero number divided by zero, it is not an indeterminate form: the function grows or decreases without bound near $a$ (there is a vertical asymptote). To find out which direction, study the sign on each side.

Also remember that a limit at a point exists only if the two one-sided limits agree: $\displaystyle\lim_{x\to a}f(x)=L \iff \lim_{x\to a^-}f(x)=\lim_{x\to a^+}f(x)=L$.

Toward $-\infty$ and with roots in the quotient

When $x\to-\infty$, the rule of degrees still holds, but you have to watch the sign: an odd power of a very large negative number is negative.

If there is a root, pull out the largest factor as if it were a power: $\sqrt{x^4+3x^2}=\sqrt{x^4}\sqrt{1+3/x^2}=x^2\sqrt{1+3/x^2}$, and $\sqrt{1+3/x^2}\to1$. So $\sqrt{x^4+3x^2}$ "behaves" like $x^2$ (degree 2).

The conjugate: radicals with $\frac00$ and $\infty-\infty$

When the indeterminate form includes a root, neither factoring nor comparing degrees works directly. You multiply and divide by the conjugate, which eliminates the root using the special product of conjugate binomials.

Diagram of multiplying by the conjugate: the root disappears from the numerator by the identity for conjugate binomials. (√A − B)(√A + B) = A − B² the root disappears from the numerator after multiplying by the conjugate

It also resolves $\infty-\infty$ when $x\to+\infty$.

Roots, parameters, and $x\to-\infty$

When the result of an $\infty-\infty$ with roots must be finite, that condition lets you find parameters: the coefficient of $x$ outside the root has to equal the coefficient of the root. For example, in $\sqrt{4t^2+5t+1}-(at+b)$, the root "looks like" $2t$, so $a=2$ keeps the limit from being infinite. Then you compute $b$ with the conjugate.

This gives different horizontal asymptotes: in the example, $y=2$ toward $+\infty$ and $y=0$ toward $-\infty$.

Parameters and the existence of the limit

For a limit to exist at a point, the two one-sided limits must be equal. If the function has a parameter, that equality (or the existence of a finite limit) lets you solve for it.

If the parameter is in a fraction whose denominator vanishes, you require the numerator to vanish too: for the limit to be finite, there must be a common factor. Then you factor using synthetic division and impose the value of the limit.

For limits with exponentials near $x=0$, use the fact that $\displaystyle\lim_{x\to0}\dfrac{e^{kx}-1}{x}=k$ (for very small $x$, $e^{kx}\approx1+kx$; check it with your calculator at $x=0.001$).
