Differentiation Rules
Regina owns a taco stand and knows that her profit depends on how many orders she sells. She wants to know how much her profit changes if she sells one more order, and she doesn't want to compute a limit every time. In this section you will see the rules that turn the derivative into a fast, mechanical calculation, for costs, profits, social media users, and much more.
From the definition to the rules: the four steps
The average rate of change of $f$ on $[a, b]$ is $\dfrac{f(b)-f(a)}{b-a}$. The derivative $f'(x)$ is the instantaneous rate of change: what is left of that average rate when the interval gets smaller and smaller. To compute it from scratch you follow the four-step rule.
It works, but it's long. The following rules give you the same result in one line.

A content creator has observed that the number of views of one of their videos on a social network follows the function $f(t) = t^2 + 20t + 100$, where $t$ is the time in hours since it was published.
Calculate the Average Rate of Change (A.R.O.C.) of the number of views in the interval $[1, 4]$. Interpret the result obtained in the context of the problem.
Basic rules: constant, power, sum
From the limit in the four steps you get these rules, which you will use all the time.
We will also use two derivatives that you should already know: $(e^x)' = e^x$ and $(\ln x)' = \dfrac{1}{x}$.

Tangent line and normal line
The derivative $f'(a)$ is the slope of the tangent line at $x = a$. With the slope and the point $(a, f(a))$ you can write the line.
If the point is not on the curve, you can't start with $f(P)$. Call $a$ the $x$-coordinate of the point of tangency and require that the tangent at $a$ pass through $P$.

Find the equations of the tangent lines to the curve $f(x) = x^2 - 4x + 3$ that pass through the external point $P(2, -5)$.
Hint: Remember that point $P$ does not necessarily lie on the graph of the function. You should write the gradient of the tangent line at a generic point $(a, f(a))$ and equate it to the gradient of the line connecting that point to $P$.
Composite functions: the chain rule
A composite function is a function inside another one, like $\sqrt{4x+1}$ or $(3x^2-1)^5$. This topic has its own page; here is what you need.
Roots are easier to differentiate as fractional powers: $\sqrt[3]{u^2} = u^{2/3}$, so its derivative is $\frac23 u^{-1/3}u'$.

Combinations: costs, profits, and growth
In real problems several rules get mixed. Identify the outermost operation (sum, product, quotient, composition) and work inward. Simplify at the end.

Piecewise functions: continuity and differentiability
A piecewise function changes formula at a point $x = c$. For it to be differentiable at $c$, the curve can't have jumps or "corners."

Given the following piecewise function, determine the values of the parameters $a$ and $b$ so that the function is differentiable across its entire domain (especially at the boundary point $x = 1$):
$$f(x) = \begin{cases} a \times e^{x-1} + 2x^2 & \text{if } x \le 1 \\ \frac{x^2 + b}{x} & \text{if } x > 1 \end{cases}$$Logarithmic differentiation
Functions like $x^x$ or $(x^2+1)^{\ln x}$ are not "pure" powers or exponentials, so no row of the table works.
Apply the technique of logarithmic differentiation to find the expression for the derivative of: $f(x) = (x^2 + 1)^{\ln(x)}$
Apply the technique of logarithmic differentiation to find the expression for the derivative of:
$f(x) = (x^2 + 1)^{\ln(x)}$
Successive derivatives
The derivative of $f'$ is called the second derivative $f''$; the derivative of $f''$ is $f'''$, and so on: $f^{(n)}$ is the derivative of order $n$. The second derivative measures how the slope changes, and you will use it to tell whether the curve is concave up ($f''>0$) or concave down ($f''<0$).

Given the rational function $f(x) = \frac{1}{2x - 3}$, obtain a general expression for its nth derivative, $f^{(n)}(x)$.
To do this, calculate the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th order derivatives, identify the pattern in numbers and signs, and write it in terms of $n$ and the factorial $n!$.
Critical points and the second derivative
A local maximum or minimum of a differentiable function occurs where the tangent is horizontal: $f'(a) = 0$.
When there are unknown parameters, each piece of data gives an equation. "The curve passes through $P$" gives $f(x_P) = y_P$. "There is an extremum at $x_P$" gives $f'(x_P) = 0$.
And if you are asked for the maximum growth rate, it is not the maximum of the function but that of its derivative $N'$. So you look for $N''(t) = 0$.
Determine the values of $a, b \in \mathbb{R}$ so that the function $f(x) = \dfrac{ax + b}{x^2 - 4}$ has a relative extremum at the point $P(0, -1)$. Once you have found…
Determine the values of $a, b \in \mathbb{R}$ so that the function $f(x) = \dfrac{ax + b}{x^2 - 4}$ has a relative extremum at the point $P(0, -1)$. Once you have found the parameters, use the second derivative to confirm whether it is a maximum or a minimum.

Back to the beginning: Regina's profit, $U(x)$, changes by approximately $U'(x)$ pesos when she sells one more order. Now you know how to compute $U'(x)$ with the rules, even when $U$ combines products, quotients, or exponentials.
