Monotonicity of a Function

Before you start, make sure you know: Differentiation rules (High School Year 2 (semesters 3 and 4))
Before you start, make sure you know: First- and second-degree equations (High School Year 2 (semesters 3 and 4))

A Mexican influencer looks at the follower graph of her channel on her dashboard and knows at a glance whether it is going up or down. But a company analyst often has only the formula for profit, cost, or audience. How can you tell, without drawing, when it grows and when it falls? The derivative tells you: its sign shows whether the function rises or falls.

The sign of the derivative decides monotonicity

To read a graph without differentiating, just see where it rises and where it falls as you move through it from left to right. Intervals are always written with values of $x$ (horizontal axis).

Given the function $f(x) = 2x^3 - 6x$, we want to know how it behaves near the origin. Calculate the gradient of the tangent line (the derivative) at the points $x = -2$, $x = 0$ and $x = 2$. Monotonicity on intervals: critical points and sign table

Procedure:

  1. Find the domain of $f$.

  2. Compute $f'(x)$.

  3. Solve $f'(x)=0$ (critical points) and also note the points where $f$ or $f'$ does not exist.

  4. Use those points to divide the number line into intervals and evaluate the sign of $f'$ at one value in each.

  5. Conclude: $f'>0$ increasing, $f'<0$ decreasing.

With a cubic polynomial there are usually two critical points and three intervals.

Reading monotonicity from the graph of $f'$

If you are given the graph of $f'$, the monotonicity of $f$ is read like this: where the curve of $f'$ is above the $X$-axis, $f$ increases; where it is below, $f$ decreases; where it crosses the axis with a change of sign, $f$ changes monotonicity.

Graph of a derivative that crosses the X-axis at two points: positive, negative, and positive. f' > 0: f increases f' < 0: f decreases f' > 0: f increases

If $f'$ changes from $+$ to $-$, $f$ goes from increasing to decreasing (local maximum); from $-$ to $+$, local minimum.

Parameters and piecewise functions

Parameters

When the function has a parameter, the monotonicity condition becomes an inequality on $f'$.

Piecewise functions

Differentiate each branch separately and study the sign on each one. At the joining point, compare the sign of $f'$ on each side.

Differentiability at the joining point

For a piecewise function to be differentiable at the joining point $x_0$, two conditions are needed: it must be continuous (both branches give the same value at $x_0$) and the one-sided derivatives must coincide (both branches arrive with the same slope).
