One-Sided Limits

A parking garage in Mexico City charges one rate per hour for the first 3 hours and a higher rate after that. If you want to know how much you'll pay "right at the 3-hour mark," the answer can depend on whether you approach that moment from before or from after. To study a point where the formula changes, you have to look at each side separately, and only then decide whether a two-sided limit exists.

One-sided limits: approaching from one side

A one-sided limit only takes into account the values of $x$ that approach $a$ from a single side.

Animation of a function with two branches: first a blue point travels along the left branch and approaches x = a, slowing down until it reaches the height of the left-hand limit, which is marked with a horizontal guide. Then an orange point travels along the right branch from the right until it reaches the height of the right-hand limit, also with its own guide. The two heights are different. x = a x → a⁻ x → a⁺

What matters is where $f(x)$ is heading, not what the function equals at $x=a$. It may not even be defined there.

Calculating with tables and direct substitution

One way to explore a limit is with a table: you choose values closer and closer to $a$ on each side and observe where $f(x)$ is heading.

When the function is a polynomial, a root, an exponential, a logarithm, $\sin\,x$, or $\cos x$ (at a point in its domain), you can simply substitute: the value $f(x)$ approaches is $f(a)$.

An investment manager observes that the yield of a high-risk fund, $R(x)$, expressed in thousands of pesos based on the invested capital $x$ (in tens of thousands), follows the model:

$R(x) = \frac{x^2 - 9}{x - 3}$

Investigate, by completing a table of values using a calculator, what happens to the yield as the investment approaches $30,000$ pesos ($x \to 3$). Use the values $2.9; 2.99; 2.999$ from the left and $3.1; 3.01; 3.001$ from the right. Could the manager claim that the limit exists even though the function is not defined at $x = 3$? Justify your answer.

Extension: infinite one-sided limits and vertical asymptotes

Extension: long-run behavior of a quotient of polynomials

If $x$ becomes enormous, in a polynomial the highest-degree term dominates: the others barely matter. That is why, in a quotient of polynomials of the same degree, the limit as $x\to+\infty$ is the quotient of the leading coefficients.

This fact is useful for finding parameters: if you are told that $\dfrac{ax^2+bx}{x^2-1}\to1$ as $x\to+\infty$, then the quotient of the leading coefficients, $a/1$, must equal $1$.

In a stock market, the price of a stock $P$ as a function of the risk $x$ is modelled as:

$P(x) = \frac{ax^2 + bx}{x^2 - 1}$

It is known that when the risk approaches $1$ from the right, the price tends to $+\infty$, but when it approaches $1$ from the left, the price tends to $-\infty$. Furthermore, when the risk tends to $+\infty$, the price tends to $1$, and for a risk $x = 2$, the price is $2$. Calculate the values of $a$ and $b$ and check the consistency of the one-sided limits at $x = 1$ and $x = -1$.

Extension: finding parameters so the limit exists

If a piecewise function has a parameter, it can be adjusted so that the limit exists at the junction point.

Move $k$ and see when the two branches join at $x=2$.

Another type of parameter shows up in fractions: if the denominator tends to $0$ and you want a finite limit, the numerator must also tend to $0$.

A function with absolute value is rewritten without it by separating where the inside is positive or negative. After that, you study the one-sided limits as usual.
