Logarithmic Function

Before you start, make sure you know: Characteristics of a function (Secondary Year 3)

The September 19, 1985 earthquake had magnitude 8.0 and the 2017 one had magnitude 7.1. That seems like a small difference, but the Richter scale is not a "normal" scale. How many times stronger was one than the other? To answer, you need logarithms: the tool that undoes powers. At the end of the page we will come back to this problem.

What a logarithm is

You know that $2^5=32$. The opposite question is: to what exponent must you raise $2$ to get $32$? That answer is called a logarithm.

Two bases have their own key on the calculator: $\log N$ means $\log_{10}N$ (base 10) and $\ln N$ is the natural logarithm, with base $e\approx2.718$.

Properties of logarithms

Since a logarithm is an exponent, it inherits the rules of powers. If $M=a^x$ and $N=a^y$, then $M\cdot N=a^{x+y}$, and from this comes the first rule.

Calculating with given values and change of base

With the properties you can get new logarithms from a few known ones. With $\log2=0.301$ and $\log3=0.477$:

The calculator only has $\log$ and $\ln$. For other bases you use the change of base.

Applications: solving for an exponent

When the unknown is in the exponent, you apply $\log$ to both sides and bring the exponent down with $\log M^k=k\log M$.

You will also see formulas like $d=10\log\frac{I}{I_0}$ (decibels) or $T(n)=k\,n\log_2 n$ (running time of an algorithm); in the decibel ones you solve using $\log x=y\iff x=10^y$.
