Inverse Proportionality
If 4 painters take 6 days to paint the front of a school in Puebla, 8 painters (twice as many) don't take twice as long: they take half the time. The more people work, the less time is needed. And what if only 3 show up? How many days will it take? That relationship, where one quantity goes up while the other goes down in the same proportion, is inverse proportionality. At the end of the page we will answer that question.
Inversely proportional quantities
When you double $x$, $y$ is divided by 2; when you divide $x$ by 3, $y$ is multiplied by 3. In the graph, $x=2$ gives $y=2$ and $x=4$ gives $y=1$: the product is always $4$. The curve gets close to the axes but never touches them: neither $x$ nor $y$ can be $0$.

A person's age and their height.
-

A gear with $20$ teeth is connected to a motor and makes $30$ revolutions per minute. If it is coupled to another smaller gear that has $15$ teeth, how many revolutions per minute will this second gear make?
Gears are also inverse: the one with fewer teeth turns faster, because teeth times revolutions stays constant.

A company distributes a bonus of $144\,000$ pesos among three of its employees in inverse proportion to the number of absences they had during the year: $2$, $3$ and $6$ absences respectively. Before transferring the money, the company applies a tiered tax deduction: it retains $15\%$ from the highest earner, $10\%$ from the middle earner and $5\%$ from the lowest earner. What net amount of money does each employee finally receive?
