Exponential Functions

Before you start, make sure you know: Operations with exponents (Secondary Year 3)
Before you start, make sure you know: Compound interest and percent change (Secondary Year 3)

A viral account triples its followers every day. A radioactive sample loses half of its mass after a certain amount of time. In both cases, the quantity does not change by always adding the same amount (as in a linear function), but by always multiplying by the same factor. That is exponential growth or decay, and the variable is no longer in the base but in the exponent.

The exponential function

  • All the functions $y=a^x$ pass through $(0, 1)$, because $a^0=1$ always.

  • They also pass through $(1, a)$.

The graphs of $y=3^x$ and $y=\left(\frac13\right)^x$ are symmetric with respect to the $y$-axis, because $\left(\frac13\right)^x=3^{-x}$. To match a graph with its formula, check whether it goes up or down as you move to the right.

The horizontal asymptote and translations

In $g(x)=a^{x-p}+q$, the exponent $x-p$ shifts the curve $p$ units horizontally, and the final $+q$ shifts it $q$ units vertically, carrying the asymptote with it: the new asymptote is $y=q$.

To find the intercepts with the axes: for the $y$-axis, evaluate $f(0)$; for the $x$-axis, solve $f(x)=0$. If the asymptote is at $y=q\ge 0$ and the curve lies above it, there is no intersection with the $x$-axis.
