Operations with Polynomials
Ximena sells bracelets at a street market. Her revenue is $I(x) = 300x - 2x^2$ pesos and her costs are $C(x) = 50x + 200$ pesos, where $x$ is the number of bracelets. Her profit $B(x) = I(x) - C(x)$ is another polynomial. Operating with polynomials (adding, multiplying, dividing them) turns several formulas into a single one, ready to evaluate or factor. At the end we will calculate how much Ximena earns if she sells 100 bracelets.
Numerical value and addition, subtraction, and multiplication
The numerical value of a polynomial is obtained by substituting a number for the variable and carrying out the operations following the order of operations. For example, if $P(x)=x^2-3x+1$, then $P(-2)=(-2)^2-3(-2)+1=4+6+1=11$. Use parentheses when substituting a negative number.
Adding or subtracting polynomials means combining like terms. The minus sign in a subtraction affects all the terms of the second polynomial.
To multiply, each term of the first polynomial is multiplied by each term of the second. An area rectangle makes this visible.

Special products
These are products so common that it is worth recognizing them without expanding step by step. They save time when operating and, in reverse, they are the first tool for factoring.
Conjugate binomials also work in reverse: $16x^2-25=(4x+5)(4x-5)$.

Division of polynomials
Dividing $D(x)$ by $d(x)$ gives a quotient $C(x)$ and a remainder $R(x)$ such that $D(x) = d(x)\cdot C(x) + R(x)$, just as in the division of numbers. The remainder has a lower degree than the divisor (or is $0$).
Let's start with the simplest case: dividing by a monomial. Each term of the polynomial is divided by the monomial: the coefficients are divided (using the sign rule) and the exponents of the same variable are subtracted.
To divide by a binomial (or any polynomial), the long procedure is used, as in the division of numbers.

Synthetic division (Ruffini's rule)
When the divisor has the form $x - a$ there is a shortcut: synthetic division (in other books, Ruffini's rule). You work only with the coefficients and the number $a$.
Another way to see the same thing: if you know the quotient and the remainder, you can rebuild the dividend with $P(x)=(x-a)\,C(x)+R$.

Combined operations and applications
Real problems chain together several operations: set up the polynomial with what the problem says, simplify it, and, if needed, evaluate it, divide it, or factor it.
Back to the beginning: with $I(x)=300x-2x^2$ and $C(x)=50x+200$, Ximena's profit is $B(x)=-2x^2+250x-200$ pesos. If she sells $x=100$ bracelets: $B(100)=-2(10{,}000)+250(100)-200=-20{,}000+25{,}000-200=4{,}800$. She earns $\$4{,}800$ (revenue of $\$10{,}000$ minus costs of $\$5{,}200$).
