Representing Functions

Before you start, make sure you know: Linear functions (Secondary Year 3)
Before you start, make sure you know: The quadratic function (Secondary Year 3)

Ximena orders a taxi through an app and sees the fare on the screen: a starting charge and a fixed amount per kilometer. That same information can be given as a formula, as a table, or as a graph. They are three representations of the same function, and knowing how to go from one to another is just as important as calculating with the formula. At the end of the page you will see how much data you need to rebuild a function from its graph.

From a table to a graph

Before making a table you need to know where the function exists. This is called its domain: the values of $x$ for which $f(x)$ can be calculated.

The time $t$ (in seconds) taken for a dropped object to fall to the ground from a height $h$ (in meters) is approximated by the radical function $t(h) = \sqrt{\frac{2h}{9.8}}$. Find the domain of the function in this context and determine the time taken for an object dropped from a height of $4.9$ meters to fall.

Parabolas and polynomials

Translations of the parabola

The parabola $y=(x-h)^2+k$ is the base parabola $y=x^2$ shifted $h$ units to the right and $k$ units up (if they are negative, to the left or down). Its vertex is $(h, k)$ and the translation vector is $(h, k)$.

Degree 3 polynomials

With a polynomial of higher degree there is no longer a single vertex formula. You use a table of values or a program like GeoGebra.
