Properties of Powers

Before you start, make sure you know: Operations with powers (Secondary Year 3)
Before you start, make sure you know: First-degree equations (Secondary Year 3)

A video goes viral: each person who watches it sends it to 2 new friends in the next round. If it starts with just one person, how many people will receive it in round 10? The answer is a power, and to handle numbers like this you need to recognize which property to apply, even when it's hidden in a long expression, with different bases, or with letters. Here you'll practice that.

The four properties, all together

You already know that $2^3 \cdot 2^5 = 2^8$. Let's see all the rules in one place.

Summary table of the four fundamental properties of powers with the same base or the same exponent. aᵐ · aⁿ = aᵐ⁺ⁿ same base: add the exponents aᵐ ÷ aⁿ = aᵐ⁻ⁿ same base: subtract the exponents (aᵐ)ⁿ = aᵐ·ⁿ power of a power: multiply aᵐ · bᵐ = (ab)ᵐ same exponent: multiply the bases

Try the interactive: change the exponent and watch how the power grows.

In astrophysics, the intensity of light received from a star is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from it. If we move to a distance $4$ times greater from the star, express using a power with a negative exponent the factor by which the original light intensity is multiplied. If the initial intensity was $I_0$, what will the new intensity be in terms of $I_0$?

Simplifying algebraic expressions

With letters it works exactly the same. Usually the result is expected without negative exponents.

Comparing powers without a calculator

To compare two powers, the usual approach is to write them with the same base. Then the one with the larger exponent wins (if the base is greater than $1$).

This idea also helps with reasoning about figures. If the edge of a cube is multiplied by $k$, the volume is $(k \cdot a)^3 = k^3 \cdot a^3$: it is multiplied by $k^3$.

Simple exponential equations

If you can write both sides with the same base, the exponents must be equal: $a^u = a^v \Rightarrow u = v$ (with $a > 0$, $a \neq 1$). This turns the exponential equation into a first-degree equation.

Solving an exponential equation: both sides are written with base 2 and the exponents are set equal. 4ˣ · 2ˣ⁺¹ = 1/8 ⟺ 2³ˣ⁺¹ = 2⁻³ same base 2 throughout: set the exponents equal, 3x + 1 = −3
