Arrangements (permutations of r items)

Eight athletes make it to the final of the $100$ m dash at the Pan American Games. In how many ways can the gold, silver, and bronze medals be awarded? You are not ordering all $8$: you only choose $3$ and place them in $3$ different spots. This is an arrangement (in other countries it is called a "variation"), and it is a key tool for counting possible and favorable outcomes in probability.

Arrangements without repetition

We reason as we do with permutations, but we stop at the $r$-th factor: for the first spot there are $n$ options, for the second $n-1$, and so on until spot $r$, where $n-r+1$ options remain.

$${}_nP_r = n \times (n-1) \times (n-2) \times \cdots \times (n-r+1) = \frac{n!}{(n-r)!}$$ Product of r decreasing factors from n down to n minus r plus 1 to calculate arrangements without repetition. n n−1 ··· n−r+1 only r factors: you stop before reaching 1

When $r=n$ and when there are conditions

If $r=n$ it is a permutation. Five friends in $4$ seats does not satisfy $r=n$, since only $4$ of the $5$ sit down; it is ${}_5P_4$.

When there is a condition (for example, "the first task is done by the most senior person"), fill the restricted spot first and then count the remaining spots with the options that are left.

Arrangements with repetition

What if the same element can appear more than once? When you roll a die $4$ times in a row, the $6$ can come up all $4$ times. Options are no longer "used up" at each stage.

$$n^r$$

Each of the $r$ positions always has the same $n$ options: it is the multiplication principle with the same factor repeated $r$ times.

Successive boxes with n options each to illustrate n to the power r in arrangements with repetition. n n ··· n r positions, always the same n options total = n^r

Fixed positions, mixed rules, and cases that add up

Sometimes part of the sequence is already fixed (like a byte that starts with $10$): those positions contribute a single factor of $1$ and you count only the free ones. In other cases some positions allow repetition and others do not: multiply each block using its own rule.

And if the length can vary ("at most $3$ symbols"), signals of different lengths never coincide. You count each length separately and add the results (addition principle).

Restriction between neighboring positions

Sometimes elements can be repeated, but not in adjacent spots. Then the options for each spot depend on the previous spot: the first position has all the options and each of the following ones has one fewer, because only the color (or symbol) of its neighbor on the left is excluded. Careful: you do not exclude all the ones already used, only the immediate neighbor.
