Quadratic Functions and Parabolas

Before you start, make sure you know: Quadratic equations (Secondary Year 3)
Before you start, make sure you know: Special products (Secondary Year 2)

You throw a ball up in the air on the high school courtyard. It rises, stops for an instant, and falls back down. How can you find its maximum height without measuring point by point? The curve the ball follows is a parabola, and its highest point can be calculated directly from the coefficients of the function.

Quadratic function: general form

Move the sliders and watch how the parabola changes.

Intercepts with the axes

With the $Y$-axis: always exactly one point, $f(0)=c$, that is, $(0, c)$.

With the $X$-axis: you have to solve $ax^2+bx+c=0$ (by factoring or with the quadratic formula, as in middle school). There can be two points, one, or none.

Finding the parabola from data

A parabola has three parameters ($a$, $b$, $c$), so you need three pieces of data. Depending on the data, you choose the form:

  • Vertex and one point: vertex form.

  • Two roots and something else: factored form.

  • Any three points: general form and a system of equations.

Intersections between curves and absolute value

To find where a parabola and a line (or two parabolas) cross, set the expressions equal and solve the resulting quadratic equation. Then substitute each $x$ to get $y$.

If the function has an absolute value, $|f(x)|$, the part of the parabola that is below the $X$-axis is reflected upward; the rest does not change. That is why $|x^2-6x+5|$ is never negative.

Piecewise functions and continuity

A piecewise function uses a different formula depending on the value of $x$. For example, a parabola for $x\le 3$ and a line for $x>3$. Each piece is evaluated only on its own interval.

A function is continuous at the break point if its graph can be drawn there without lifting your pencil. That happens when the two pieces give the same value at that point: you evaluate both formulas at the break $x$ and set them equal.

Optimization with parabolas

If a problem is modeled with a quadratic, its maximum or minimum is at the vertex. No other tool is needed.

For profits: profit = revenue − costs. If the costs are $\$40{,}000+300x$ pesos and the revenue is $I(x)$, then $B(x)=I(x)-40{,}000-300x$ and you look for its vertex.

Back to the beginning: the maximum height of the ball is calculated with $y_v=f\!\left(\frac{-b}{2a}\right)$, just as in the javelin example.
