Direct Proportionality
At the open-air market, 3 kg of oranges cost $\$45$. How much will you pay for 7 kg? A recipe, a scale map, converting pesos to dollars: in all of them there are two quantities that increase (or decrease) at the same rate. Learning to recognize this with confidence, and not just "by intuition," is the foundation for sharing, interest, and linear functions.
Directly proportional quantities
When you double $x$, $y$ doubles; when you divide $x$ by 3, $y$ is also divided by 3. The line always passes through $(0, 0)$: with no quantity, there is nothing to pay for or to share.

Applications: graphs, scales, ratios, and similarity
When a situation is proportional, the graph is a line through the origin and the constant $k$ is its slope: what a car consumes per kilometer, how far a train travels per hour. To find it, read a point on the line and divide.
Ratio and proportion. An alloy "of silver to copper in a ratio of 9 to 2" means that for every 9 parts of silver there are 2 of copper. If there are 45 g of copper, there are $45 \div 2 = 22.5$ g per part, and the silver is $9 \times 22.5 = 202.5$ g.
Similarity (shadows). If the sun strikes at the same angle, the height of an object and its shadow are proportional: $\dfrac{\text{height}}{\text{shadow}}$ is the same for the pole and for the building.
Unit conversions. Before using the rule of three, put everything in the same unit: $1\text{ m}^3 = 1{,}000$ L.

Three friends decide to invest their savings in a joint fund for a project. The first contributes $\frac{1}{4}$ of the total capital, the second contributes $\frac{2}{5}$ of the total and the third contributes the rest of the required money. At the end of the investment, they obtain a net profit of 8 400 pesos. If the distribution must be in direct proportion to the fraction of capital contributed, how much money in pesos does each of the friends receive?

The variables $X$ and $Y$ are directly proportional. In an experiment, it was recorded that when $X = m + 2$, the value of the dependent variable is $Y = 15$. On the other hand, under the same conditions, when $X = m - 2$, the value is $Y = 9$. Set up an algebraic proportion to calculate the numerical value of parameter $m$ and then determine the constant of proportionality $k = \frac{Y}{X}$.
Back to the beginning: 3 kg cost $\$45$, so $k = 15$ and 7 kg cost $15 \times 7 = 105$ pesos.
