Logarithms
If something doubles every period, you can solve $2^x = 8$ at a glance: $x=3$. But what about $2^x = 10$? No integer works, because $10$ is between $2^3=8$ and $2^4=16$. You need an operation that answers "what exponent do you have to raise $2$ to in order to get $10$?" That operation is the logarithm, and it shows up in earthquakes, sound, acidity, radioactive decay, and population growth.

The graph: the inverse of the exponential
If $\log_a b = c$ is equivalent to $a^c=b$, then the functions $y=\log_a x$ and $y=a^x$ are inverses. Their graphs are symmetric about the line $y=x$.
Properties of logarithms
Since a logarithm is an exponent, the properties of powers carry over: multiplying becomes adding, dividing becomes subtracting, and the exponent comes out as a multiplier.

Change of base
A scientific calculator only has the $\log$ key (base $10$) and the $\ln$ key (base $e$, which we will see later). For other bases you use the change of base formula.

The number e and the natural logarithm
Many phenomena that grow or decay continuously (radioactive decay, for example) are written using the number $e \approx 2.718$, a constant like $\pi$, which is also irrational. The natural logarithm is the logarithm base $e$ and is written $\ln$:
$$\ln b = c \iff e^c = b$$The amount of Carbon-14 ($C-14$) in an organic archaeological remain follows the law of radioactive decay $N(t) = N_0 \times e^{-\lambda t}$, where the decay constant is…
The amount of Carbon-14 ($C-14$) in an organic archaeological remain follows the law of radioactive decay $N(t) = N_0 \times e^{-\lambda t}$, where the decay constant is $\lambda \approx 0.0001209$ and $t$ is the elapsed time in years. If laboratory analysis detects that only $30\,\%$ of its original amount of $C-14$ remains in a fragment of prehistoric bone (that is, $N(t) = 0.30 \times N_0$), what is the estimated age of the bone?
Exponential and logarithmic equations
When the unknown is in the exponent and you can't make the bases equal, you take logarithms of both sides. When it is inside a logarithm, you use the definition to "undo" it.

On a well-known social network, the number of followers of an account with viral content grows according to an exponential model $S(t) = S_0 \times k^t$, where $t$ is measured in days. It is known that on the initial day ($t = 0$) the account had $200$ followers and on day $5$ it reached $6400$ followers. First, calculate the exact value of the growth constant $k$. Then, determine on which exact day it will pass the one-million-follower mark.

On a regular graph, the numbers on the axis go up one at a time (or five at a time): the distance between marks is always the same amount. On an axis with a base-10 logarithmic scale, the distance between marks is always the same factor: each mark is worth 10 times the previous one ($10^1, 10^2, 10^3,\dots$). What is measured along the axis is the exponent, that is, $\log N$.
If a quantity grows as $N(t)=N_0\cdot 10^{kt}$, then $\log N = \log N_0 + k\,t$. That is a line in $t$: the slope is $k$ and the intercept is $\log N_0$. That is why a straight line on a graph with a logarithmic vertical axis indicates exponential growth.

The following graph represents the population growth of two bacterial colonies, A and B, in a laboratory. The scale of the vertical axis (which indicates the number of bacteria $N(t)$) is logarithmic in base 10, while the horizontal axis (time in hours) has a linear scale. By observing the line describing the behavior of colony A, find its associated exponential function $N(t) = N_0 \times 10^{k \times t}$, knowing that it passes exactly through the points $(0, 10^2)$ and $(4, 10^4)$. At what time $t$ will colony A reach exactly one million bacteria ($10^6$)?
Real-world logarithmic scales
Many quantities vary over enormous ranges, so they are measured with a logarithmic scale: each unit up multiplies by $10$ instead of adding a fixed amount. This is how the Richter scale is measured, the one the National Seismological Service (Servicio Sismológico Nacional) uses to report earthquakes in Mexico.

The sound intensity level, measured in decibels (dB), is calculated using the physics formula $L = 10 \times \log \left( \frac{I}{I_0} \right)$, where $I$ is the sound intensity in $\text{W/m}^2$ and $I_0 = 10^{-12} \text{ W/m}^2$ represents the minimum threshold of human hearing. If the heavy traffic noise on an avenue records a level of $85$ dB, what is its sound intensity $I$? If a jackhammer on a construction site emits twice the sound intensity of that traffic, how many exact decibels will the sound level meter record?
Back to the beginning: to solve $2^x = 10$ we take logarithms: $x\cdot\log 2 = \log 10 = 1$, so $x = \dfrac{1}{\log 2} \approx \dfrac{1}{0.301} \approx 3.32$, a value between $3$ and $4$, as we expected.
