Problems with equations

Solving an equation is the easy part: it is mechanical. The difficult part, and the one that really counts, is setting it up: turning a word problem into an equation with letters. With a clear method and a few templates, most problems become routine.

Before you start, make sure you know: Algebraic language (2nd ESO)
Before you start, make sure you know: First-degree equations (2nd ESO)

The four-step method

Four-step diagram for solving problems with equations: define the unknown, translate the data, set up and solve, and check the solution. 1What is x?Write it down 2Translate thedata using x 3Set up andsolve 4Check againstthe statement Step 4 uncovers half of the mistakes: does the result make sense?
  1. Choose the unknown and write down what it means: "$x$ = Hugo's age today". If there are several quantities, express them all using the same letter if you can.

  2. Translate each piece of data into algebraic language (go over the table of algebraic expressions).

  3. Set up the equation using the missing condition and solve it.

  4. Check against the problem statement (not against the equation, which might be set up wrongly) and answer with a sentence and units.

Numbers and ages

Consecutive numbers: $x,\ x + 1,\ x + 2$. Consecutive even (or odd) numbers: $x,\ x + 2,\ x + 4$.

Ages: make a table with "today", "ago" and "in". Time passes at the same rate for everyone:

Today In 6 years' time
Hugo $x$ $x + 6$
Marta $x + 4$ $x + 10$

A new rectangular play area is being designed in a municipal park. It is known that the length of the area must be $5$ metres greater than the width. If the total area allocated for play is $150$ $m^2$, calculate the dimensions (length and width) of the area.

Area = 150 m² x x + 5

Moving objects, mixtures and sharing

These are the classic arithmetic problems, but set up using $x$. The templates:

Type Typical equation
Meeting (they set off towards each other) $v_1 t + v_2 t = \text{distance}$
Catching up (same direction) $v_1 t = \text{head start} + v_2 t$
Mixture $p_1 x + p_2 (T - x) = p_m \cdot T$
Sharing among people (price per person before) − (after) = difference
