Longitude and latitude

When the GPS on your phone places you on the map, it is really giving two numbers: your latitude and your longitude. With them, any point on the Earth can be located, just as the coordinates $(x, y)$ locate a point on a plane. The difference is that here the "sheet" is a sphere, and the coordinates are angles.

Before you start, make sure you know: Circle and circumference (1st ESO)

Meridians and parallels

We imagine the Earth as a sphere that rotates about an axis passing through the North and South Poles.

  • Meridians: semicircles that run from pole to pole. The reference one is the Greenwich meridian (London), the 0° meridian.

  • Parallels: circles perpendicular to the axis. The largest is the equator (the 0° parallel), which divides the Earth into the northern and southern hemispheres.

Distances along a meridian

Two cities on the same meridian are separated by an arc of a great circle. The radius of the Earth is about 6 371 km, so the length of a complete meridian (one full turn) is $2\pi \cdot 6\,371 \approx 40\,000$ km.

Two cities, P and Q, are situated on the same meridian. City P is at $42^\circ$ N and city Q is at $15^\circ$ N. Another city, R, is situated on the same parallel as Q, but at a distance of $20^\circ$ longitude to the East.

Calculate, using $R = 6\,371$ km:

  1. a) The distance between P and Q along the meridian.
  2. b) The distance between Q and R along the parallel.

Time zones

The Earth makes one turn of 360° in 24 hours, so it rotates $360° : 24 = 15°$ every hour. That is why it is divided into 24 time zones, each 15° of longitude wide. Towards the east it is later; towards the west, earlier.

Consecutive strips of time zones, each 15 degrees of longitude wide, and their correspondence in hours towards the east and west. 10 h11 h12 h 13 h14 h15 h ← westeast → each strip: 15° of longitude = 1 hour
