The concept of a fraction

You eat three quarters of a pizza. Your download is five eighths complete. You spend two fifths of your study time on maths. These are all fractions: numbers that describe parts.

Numerator and denominator

Circle divided into four quadrants with two coloured in, showing the numerator 2 and the denominator 4 of the fraction. 2 4 ← numerator: the coloured parts ← denominator: how many parts in all

Play with the numerator and the denominator and see how the picture changes.

Identify whether the following pairs of fractions are equivalent using the cross-products method:

  1. a) $\frac{12}{15}$ and $\frac{4}{5}$
  1. b) $\frac{7}{3}$ and $\frac{21}{6}$
  1. c) $\frac{10}{25}$ and $\frac{6}{15}$

For any pair that is not equivalent, state which of the two fractions is greater.

Proper fractions, improper fractions and mixed numbers

Bars comparing the proper fraction 3/5, which is less than one whole, with the improper fraction 7/4, equal to one whole plus 3/4. Proper: 3/5 less than one whole Improper: 7/4 more than one whole: 1 + 3/4

Fraction of an amount

When a fraction acts as an operator, you find "the fraction of" an amount by dividing by the denominator and multiplying by the numerator.

Diagram showing how to calculate a fraction as an operator on an amount, dividing the total by the denominator and multiplying by the numerator. 3/4 of €200 200 : 4 = 50(one quarter) 50 · 3 = 150 €
